Hey Chet,

Those measurements will take some time. I don't have an accurate ruler at the moment so I can definitely get back to you on that soon.

As far as the nut goes I just checked it and it looked pretty dirty. No hard burrs or stops anywhere but definitely dirty. Cleaning it didn't immediately fix the problem but I may need to re-intonate.

I'll get those measurements to you as soon as I can. In the meantime, can you tell me what the measurements should be? And what an acceptable margin of error would be?

Thanks,

Brian

Hey Chet,

Those measurements might take me some time to get. I don't have an accurate ruler yet and don't want to give you the wrong info. What are the correct measurements?

I checked the nut it is not very clean. No burrs or stops but it's definitely dirty. Cleaning it did not immediately fix the problem but I may need to re-intonate it now that the nut is clean. I'll report back once this is done.

Thanks,

Brian

Niki, Just saw your post. Thanks for the link.

I've just got the one string tree now but I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was off.

The earvana replacement nut looks like a good attempt at a quick solution. Which size would you recommend? The 1 5/8 or the 1 11/16?

Also, I've never replaced a nut. Are they woodglued? What's the best way to go about removing the original?

Thanks,

Brian

Briguy.

The stringtree isnt causing the problem. As OrvilleOwner said the tree is to keep downpressure on the headstock side of the nut. This stops the string from jumping out of the slot by pushes the string firmly into the nut slot. In doing so it also sitar'ing by ensuring the strings breakpoint (talklength) is limited to the fretboard side of the nut. In otherwords your string isnt ringing from the rear edge of the nut. I cant for the life of me believe the stringtree on the B&E strings is causing a problem on the G. However fitting a tree to the G string may solve the 'dull/muted' open note half of your problem.

As for the nut itself I used this one

1 5/8's for my mexican strat. Your better off to measure your nut width before ordering though.

With nuts if you've never fitted one or dont plan on fitting them for others. Then dont bother. Theres a load of outlay for files. It takes ages to get your technique right. I used to drive 100miles (a easy 3.5hour journey in england) to have mine fitted, before I worked out how to do it. It's far easier, their quite a exact science.

I just dragged out some repair books and found this:

Factory Specs for Fender Setups: Nut Action measured from the bottom of the string to the top of the first fret should be .020"

Niki, sorry for the confusion. I know the existing string tree isn't causing the issue. I was wondering if the lack of a second one was the cause. Clearly the consensus is that it is not. When I get the ruler I'll measure the width of the existing nut and order the correct replacement and take it to a professional to have it installed.

Chet, thanks for the measurement specs. Do you still want the distance at the nut as well?

Thanks again guys!

Brian
