I just picked up a Strat Saturday for $699 at the local Music Go Round. It's an American made Strat, Sept 14, 2004 stamped on the neck, a Z serial number on the back of the headstock, a Rectangular 50th anniversary 4 bolt plate on the neck, Black in color with white pickguard and knobs. I took the pickguard off and it's painted black on the body and in the cavities, and theres a small round hole about the size of a dime above and between the front and middle pickup cavitity stamped into the body. It has the noiseless pickups and it came with a decent Gator case, not the nicer Fender case. It's pretty clean and sounds fantastic thru my Marshall. With the guitar coming from Music Go Round, I'm always a little leary. What should I look for in terms of trying to determine if it's all original and not some parts caster?

Not that this helps but to me as long as you love playing it and it does it for you I think it's a good deal. If you like the sound and it feels right then you made a good decision. I can see you wanting to authenticate it though so best of luck to you with that.

Sight unseen, neither. The word, "adequate" comes to mind.

$699 for an MIA Strat in good condition with a case is a very good price if it is not a Hwy 1. If it is Hwy 1 ... well ... you could have bought a new one for that. If it has the small headstock, it is not a Hwy 1. What kind of trem does it have? 2-point or 6-screw vintage?

It seems like it was a good deal from the information you provided. And that little dime sized hole under the pickguard is normal. If anything, it just means that you have a real Fender.

IIRC the dime size hole is part of the CNC process, I think it's the guide hole.

pics would help. a big 70's head stock would be a highway one, with the smaller head stock, it may be an american standard. If the guitar sounds and feels good to you, then I'd say you got a good deal. Z7.... would be 2007, Z8..... would be 2008, ZD6..... would be an american deluxe 2006, etc.,. If possible post some pics. :)
