The debate continues. The headstock is always a love hate relationship. Either you love it or you hate it. Either way, Fender makes some great guitars. Too bad some models don't have the option of either way (Highway 1 and American Special??) But then again, it makes sense they'd rather sell a more expensive American strat with the smaller headstock. They know the lower end models will sell faster, but they also know the larger headstock is a turnoff. That's why they changed Squires too, rather have beginners buy MIM Strats. They want us to spend more $$$. That's my conspiracy theory!

I guess that's true about the other features of the Strat too:

some guys hate the 2-point trems
some guys hate having a humbucker
some guys hate pop-in trem bars
some guys hate the position of the volume control

etc

I really dig both the original shape and size of both the Strat, and the tele. To me, both guitars are absolutely perfect in their design, from end to end, with one exception, which isn't really about looks but instead, comfort. I would like to see one contour on the Tele where the picking arm rests on the body, like the Strat has, as long as it looked good there. Of course, that's simply my taste. Also, as for me, i don't see this whole thread as a debate, but rather an interesting collection of preferences regarding our beloved Fender treasures.

I like the 70's headstocks because they're so ridiculous, that they aren't ridiculous.

I know that didn't make any sense at all!

The strat was developed from the tele for the same reason you mentioned above... Fender just took a bunch of ideas from the tele and made the completely different Strat. Even changed the headstock to resemble a note....
