Gbsons chairman has said something kinda like, in the 50-60's it was instruments being produced then they turned into products..

But no doubt todays Fenders are also instruments :D

Thats why I love the Time Machine guitars, 21 century custom shop craftmanship with vintage look and definately vintage feel(the best way)
Fenders best line if you ask me

i think there's no denying that custom shop strats are good instruments, but when you start comparing them to preproduction strats and strats that were made by aliens i dont think you can really compete(IMHO).

Howdy 53 Strat (or JMPRO, I guess),
It's good to hear some more about your prototype body.
I linked to some info in a thread not too long ago:
http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4886&highlight=shamblin

The site with the info & pictures of that prototype is
http://soundlogic-usa.com/electron/FDP/fdp229a.html

Check out the link to the thread at the FDP (Fender Discussion Pages) where JMPRO first came forward with this guitar/story.

I hope the story is given in the upcoming Vintage Guitar magazine article. I know that I had MANY questions after learning some of the story.

I sure wish a prototype of Fender's first attempted Strat Tremolo would surface.

53strat, how 'bout sharing some more pics of that '53 Strat®? I'd love to see 'em! I'm sure others would as well.

Seconded...the '53 Strat is the most elusive guitar ever made, along with the Gibson Ligthning...if anybody has pictures of the Holy Relic, please share with the nice people of the net!

I second that! Very nice! For some reason I have this urge to try to find a Jackson Roswell...

I have a reason about my preference for new over vintage-I like a guitar that is reasonably expendable. In other words, something that I can play that I do like, until the frets grind off without feeling too much remorse. To me, the more 'unique' or 'vintage' a guitar is (and I've had a few of each-and got rid of them), the more that tends to get in my way. I'd just rather play, and not worry about devaluation from just PLAYING it (isn't that what a guitar is for?), damage, maintenance or loss. If I can get 90% there with a recent make guitar, I'm happy.

There are probably as many opinions as there are guitars out there about which is superior, vintage or Custom Shop or whatever. As I said before, it's all up to personal preference. But I don't have deep enough pockets to pick and choose anymore, and I don't lose sleep over it.

I have played Fenders exclusively since 1972. I have owned 3 PreCbs Stratocasters. They were the only ones I've ever owned that nailed the SRV tone. They were made when guitars were actually "MADE".. Nowadays to pay 2k or 3k or higher for a clone makes no sense, all they are to me is guitars made with "close attention to detail" ......the way all Fenders should be made in the first place. You will never convince me that a freshly painted and assembled guitar made to "look" vintage will sound exactly like a PreCbs,not today, not ever, The person that says they are firewood most likely cannot afford one. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it! Peace!

well i dont mean to take away from a 53 prototype, i read the story and it was incredible!!! kind of sad really, but over all it is just such a cool and incredibly important peice of history as well as the owner. even though the lack of interest is kind of sad to me it just goes to show how cool strat players are that something that literally has more importance than most things in american museums as regard to history and art, still in this year has a demeanor as cool as blue smoke in a jazz club. :D

as far as the aliens i dont remember much, they kind of freaked me out!!

I don't think there was a lack of interest in the '53 Strat, I think it deserves a separate post. But since this topic isn't specifically about it, don't be surprised if it takes secondary notice. BTW, I would rather hear it being played than seeing it in a museum-I hope that's NOT where vintage guitars end up! But it's also like the old saying about elephants-nice to look at, but I wouldn't want to own one. Too much hassle for me, they're difficult to enjoy as ONLY a guitar. It's a contradictory mindset, I know, but one that I would rather not live with. And also the reason why I don't own any vintage guitars anymore.

Yeah, when the now-vintage guitars of mine got so valuable, I couldn't risk taking them out to gigs in crummy bars. I also stopped taking older, vintage tube amps too. I went to using solid state amps for reliability and lightness!

But I would still use the great sounding vintage axes/amps for recording.

You nailed it on the head! I don't have a problem with owning a vintage guitar even though I don't (I still have vintage amps, and I don't plan for them to go anywhere), but there is a certain amount of responsibility that comes with owning a vintage guitar anymore.
