I will asume some of you are not stupid and probably can read. Put down the bong and get Richard Smiths book "Fender, the sound heard around the world" And read about when the prototype guitars were built and see the pictures on pages 127 & 132 of that book . The guitar I have was built in 53 and photographed by Mr. Fender himself. The pictures were found in Mr. Fenders files when Richard was doing research for his book. A few of you need to read a little history before you profess to be experts in the field. The guitar is going to be featured in Vintage Guitar magazine in the next few months.

There is nothing in the book that would have demonstrated that you own the guitar in the book, there was nothing you posted that made any connection between your guitar and the book, and I think you need to learn some manners.

I also find it amusing that you try to insult us for not being able to "read" the book, and then reveal that what you meant to say was "look at the picture." Perhaps if you could write, we could read.

Finally; one more personal attack, and I'll request that you be banned from this forum... "important" guitar or not.

You sir sould be the one to learn some manners. You are the one that automatically assumed that I was wrong before checking the facts. I am sure the good boys at the Fender custom shop would show you the error of your ways after they had my guitar for 2 days for inspection and photographing . Just look at the grain paterns in the wood in the book and the photo of my guitar for confirnmation. This guitar was given to my father in 1954 by a friend that worked for Leo and has been in my family ever since. In Richards book the passage read that the first strats tremolo just did not work and they went back to the drawing board where they camne up with the design that was almost exactly like we know the tremolo today except it had only 3 springs, they found that only 3 springs didn't work so well and they went to 5 springs. The 3 spring prototype was the one Leo photographed and the guitar that was later given to my father. I am sorry if none of this convinces you, but hey you don't matter anyhow.

If you can't understand why people would not simply take your word that you own a "'53 STrat" (or, for that matter, give a damn whether you do or not), well, I don't know what to tell you.

Anyway, my point all through this thread has been... even if Leo chewed it into shape with his own teeth, it's just a chunk of wood, not a holy relic, and "vintage worship" is misguided.

Gravity Jims first post regarding my picture was rude and condescending. I never said the Strat was not introduced in 54, it was. There were prototype Strats being built beginning in the spring of 53, my guitar being the 2nd or 3rd of those. Believe it, don't believe it. I have encountered narrow minded people in the past and will again and it is thier loss to be so skeptical without first reviewing the facts.

That's pretty much the way I took it. He was pretty fast to get defensive and jump on his high horse, insinuating we're all stoners and can't read(what wasn't even there to read).

This thread is interesting enough to me (I love to hear about old guitars!!) that I'm leaving it open tentatively. That said, if it were a lesser thread it'd be locked right now. If we could please immediately take the personal disses out of this equation that'd be just dandy. Regardless of what may have led up to it the "bong" comment above was over the top.

I was wondering when you'd show up.

I thought for sure you'd squash this thread, I'm glad you didn't. I'm curious about how this is gonna play out.

There must be hundreds of pics of Strats on this site and the when I post one of mine suddenly I am a "Hey, look at me" and basicly called a liar by one of the members. How would you expect me to respond. All I ask is that people know what they are talking about before they call someone a liar. Its alright to be skeptical but read up a little and know a little history before you accuse , you might wind up looking like the fool.

I have more pics that were professionally done but can't use them untill the artical in Vintage Guitar magazine comes out as I agreed with the magazine not to publish those photos before their isssue is published.

None of this really matters anyway because if this is the kind of reception one gets around here then I won't be back.

Look man, you said you had a '53 strat and everyone knows the strat was introduced in '54. Instead of saying you had a proto type you referenced a book with pages that didn't back up your '53 claim. Only then did you say to reference the pictures and that your was a prototype given to a family member by Leo himself. You held all that info back and treated everyone like idiots because they didn't have info that you did. You acted like an elitist, far above all us silly unbelievers. You tried to set us up and it backfired. That was immature.

There, I'm done.

By the way, very cool to own a proto strat.

I agree with a lot of different points here. Not all old guitars are firewood! Some sound great and have that broken in feel that make playing them a joy. A lot of vintage guitars are WAY overpriced though. You gotta pay for nostalgia.
I have played both great and crappy vintage & new guitars. If I was gonna drop $3,000 for a guitar though, I would go Fender Custom Shop over a vintage guitar anyday.

53strat, how 'bout sharing some more pics of that '53 Strat®? I'd love to see 'em! I'm sure others would as well.
