I noticed in 2010 that all the online retailers list the V neck version of the American Deluxe Strat as discontinued, but the fender website still lists it as a "valid" entry. Anyone know what is going on with that particular model?

It very well could be on its way out. The American Special seems to be an improved model of the Highway 1. Most likely its being discontinued. I don't think it was a popular model because some of the color variations were ugly. Like the Red with faded gold pickguard. I'm betting in the next few months the Highway 1 will be out the door.
