Why did you take the Clapton off the list. Go take the hour ride and check it out as it is a great ax. Besides the fact it has a TBX and Midboost you can pull a lot of tones out that guitar from nice cleans to that creamy almost humbucker tone. I am not saying this because I own one but out of all the guitars I own that would be one of the last to go.

Ditto! 8)

ok so I made a list of the guitars I plan on test driving...now there are some non fender guitars on the list. Please try and be objective ( l know l know, this is a fender forum) so here we go

Fender road worn 60's strat
fender lone star
fender american special
fender american special HSS
Gibson SG
Gibson Les paul
schecter solo 6 hellraiser
schecter solo 6 classic

The first four are likely generically the same with respect to the basic production platform Fender mass produces with these days....i.e.....an HSH body routing with a modern C-neck. The neck on the 60's may be slightly different and I don't know if it has a vintage routing. It might not. You need to read the specs section for the electronics.

On the Gibsons, Les Paul guitars differ widely. There are a range of contemporary internal body types and woods, pickup combinations, necks, and finishes. Somewhat similar with the SG's. You have to play them. \

Schecters I can't help you with.

I see a price variance here. What's your budget?

An Artist series Clapton may be a couple of hundred above $1200, depending upon current retail or sales pricing. I've seen some Gibson Les Pauls in that range built with eco-friendly woods. You'll need to shop and price compare. The Fender '57Hotrod, which is a great guitar, is $1699 at Guitar Center, and likely some other vendors as we..

My wife got me the Texas Special pickups for Christmas. I put them in my mim strat and I have to say I'm really impressed with their tone with overdrive/distortion. My Les Paul with EMG's sits in the closet.

Maybe give an Am. Special or Am. Special HSS strat a try as they have the Texas Specials.

I'm no expert I just know that I liked what I heard when dirtied up my TS's.

Current GC price on the Artist Series EC is $1599.

You wont get any more gain out of a humbucker than you will a Clapton circuited guitar. The midboost really piles the thickness on.

Personally on mine I put a dimarzio fs2 into the bridge position. I just do not need any pedals with that now. VN's for rhythm which they excell at with their thin almost acoustic tone, Fs2 for regular lead. Fs2 and 25db's of mid for those moments when you want to shut people up.

Everything else just leaves me thinking 'meh'. Yes everything, the hotrod, the customshop. Its a real gain addicts overdose paradise. I've got to mod my expensive guitars now just so they can keep up. The only guitar I have that does keep up is a Jackson Dinky with a EMG 81/89 set that I clapton circuited. Its ideal for Iommi tone without the trebleboost.

well I went to guitar center yesterday, the clapton is gone. I tried out all the other guitars on my list and a couple of others. I really liked the road worn 60's strat and the schecter solo 6. My favorite guitar that I played was a Gibson Les Paul standard traditional pro but at 2000 bucks it's more than I can afford. I am going to go back and really play the road worn and the solo 6, give them a real work out.

There's no such thing as 'gone' at GC where that guitar is concerned. Just tell them you want one. They'll find a store that has one and do an interstsore transfer.

Not a problem. Tell them you're interested in the guitar. They will generally have no objection to having one in the store. this is a big company. If not you, someone else will buy it. The proceeds all go into the same latrine. Black is probably the best finish to ask for under the circumstances.

good point I never thought of it that way. Now my question is on a new guitar can you usually haggle with them on price? I just missed a sale they were having.

Depends. The sale was on the American Standard if my memory serves me. You can ask if they can do better on the price of the Clapton. Don't know what your credit worthiness is, but if you buy it on their no interest charge plan, and pay it off in 11 mos (1 month cushion) you'll be using their money at no interest. I've done that with three guitars already. 8)

Another great one to ask for is the Kenny Wayne Shepherd strat if you looking for a great guitar. Its not too expensive either if you budget minded....
