Dan, the best thing you can do is go play a lot of different models. One will call out to you and feel right. If it was me I'd find a used American Standard. They go in this area for 750-850. Great guitar that will last you a lifetime. A rock and roll machine. The Clapton is a great guitar too.Welcome to the forum.......... 8) Mike

Just found a eric clapton sig series for 1200 and a billy corgan sig for 1000. The clapton is only an hour away. What are your feeling on both of these guitars? I am not familiar with pickups in general. The corgan specs are
1 Special Design Dimarzio® Billy Corgan Single-Spaced Humbucking Pickup (Neck),
1 Dimarzio® Chopper™ Pickup (Middle),
1 Special Design Dimarzio® Billy Corgan Single-Spaced Humbucking Pickup (Bridge)

And the clapton has 3 Vintage Noiseless™ Pickups (Neck, Middle, Bridge)

Clapton guitar, hands down. Strat's are best with single coils. Those vintage noiseless are awesome. Unless you want a more darker, metal tone of the humbucker...

See thats the thing, I don't play metal. I do play rock though. I really want something that will perform well for hard rock but also have a very good clean sound.

Then you might want to try a mustang my friend has one and its really versatile

Can those pickups be changed out for something else down the road if I wanted to?

i went to gc with the intention of purchasing a 70s reissue stratocaster w/ash body. and the deluxe reverb amp. they had the amp but, no reissue strat. and, i was not wanting to leave without a new strat so, i took my time and went thru quite a few of them running thru a deluxe they had there (which i bought) they all felt/sounded prety good but i kept trying other ones. the sales guy was pretty patient with me and encouraged me to try out anyone i wanted. i told him about looking for 70s reissue w/ash body he brought me a american deluxe standard ash body strat. for some reason, as soon as he handed it to me, i knew something was diffrent about this one from the others. i plugged it in and fell in love with the tone and playabilty of this guitar. i guess thats what they call bonding or something but anyway, i bought the guitar and to this day still in love with it as much as the day i bought it. i love the strat single coil sound and the noiseless pups on it. i rarely use the s-1 on it cos i love the twang the pups produce in normal mode. i dont see any changes or mods planned for this guitar. its great as it is. to me, it sounds more like a humbucker style sound when the s-1 is pushed down (on position) but i have my squier or my epi 335 for playing when i feel like a humbucker sound. in your case, a hss guitar should fulfill your needs you get best of both worlds or you could add coil tap switch to it too.

A HSS is humbucker in the bridge position and two single coils the SSS means it has 3 single coil pickups. If it were me for any type rock and a clean sound that could dirty up nicely,I'd go for the 3 single coils.

I,personally would go with the Clapton Sig. for the music you said you played id get the corgan...or better yet, try to play them both then decide.

Either way you'll come out a winner and...it WILL last FOREVER.

The best thing about Fender guitars is you can do just about anything you want. Pickups are changable. Seymour Duncun makes these humbuckers that fit in single coils. Some people actually have different loaded pickguards so they can change it up whenever you want. Got to hand to Leo Fender for making a guitar with the intention of interchangable part....

Those are damn good prices in today's market for Artist Series instruments. You should play both to get a feel for the necks and the tonal ranges of the pickups.

The Clapton circuit has a 25db preamp powered by a battery stowed in the trem rout behind the back plate and is activated through the jack when the cable is inserted. The preamp level is controlled by the lower 'tone' pot and will turn the guitar from mild mannered clarkstrat to superstrat as you increase the level. The upper tone pot is called a TBX (treble/bass cut). There's a midpoint detente (stop) at 5 where both extremes are balanced. Counter-clockwise from that point, the lows are emphazed, and clockwise from there, the highs. The trem is stopped by a wood block because EC prefers to play it as a hardtail(non-trem), but the block can be removed and the trem set to float if that's what you prefer. Itis not a divebomber type of trem. It is vintage strat design as is the bridge and block. Basically a '57 Stratocaster with a secret identity. The Corgan is only non-trem.

The Corgan pickups, for sure, are hotter and offer an interesting mix of pickup combinations. The Clapton pickups are called Vintage Noiseless, basically stacked humbucking pickups, which EC feels gives him a vintage tone w/o 60 cycle hum issues. The Corgan neck is a C, the Clapton is a modified V-neck, slightly slimmer than the conventional Fender V-neck. It sports a smaller headstock, while the Corgan offers the larger 70's look which some peope prefer in that they see it as more wood and better sustain.

Both are available in black orwhite. The Clapton is also available in Pewter, Red, and Green.

Let us know which one you gave a home.

Doc.

As a postcript, with respect to the above....for the Clapton you can definitely use theFender SCN's which are in the American Deluxe guitar, or Gold Lace Sensors which were the first Clapton pickups.

For anything else, you have to determine how well they will handle the midboost circuit. Active electronics requires quieter pickups.

Why did you take the Clapton off the list. Go take the hour ride and check it out as it is a great ax. Besides the fact it has a TBX and Midboost you can pull a lot of tones out that guitar from nice cleans to that creamy almost humbucker tone. I am not saying this because I own one but out of all the guitars I own that would be one of the last to go.
