Nikininja is right about old electrics,I was lucky enough to come across some 60s vintage guitars of various makes that are the cream of the crop but have come across some that are absolutely pathetic in playability and tone.It seems that in the 60s not a lot of attention was put in quality control and pickups especially were inconsistant in quality and windings except of course the ones wound by Abby Yberra because when the 60s rolled around she was an old hand at it.

No kidding, its the guitarist who becomes comfortable with the guitar. The tone is in your hands, not the guitar. Nikininja is proof of that!

I must say thats a nice compliment, I've only ever been told I'm proof of evolution working in reverse, before now.

I dont see how I prove the tone thing though.

You may not remember, but I read one of your replies in a post where you were called in for an encore but your guitar was already packed. You took up a squire and didn't miss a beat. What I'm saying is we can play just about anything out there no matter how cheap it may be. We adjust our playing and make it work. All of which comes from our hands, not the instrument..... We just have our preferences of what we like.

Well sir thats why were in the game isnt it, to make a sound.

We get SO wrapped up about tone and setup and every little thing has to be spot on correct. Perfect, just as we want it. Its a wonder we have time to strike a note.

All any of us ever wanted to do was make a noise that sounded half good. You see these guys of the 50's and 60's on both sides of the atlantic. Mucking about making bits of unusual wood and metal make noises. They weren't worrying about their intonation being perfect. They were just getting on with it, and look what it gave us. Some of the most trouble making, best music and musical heroes ever.

Can you tell I'm finding this acoustic guitar very liberating. Theres no mucking about with it. It's their, you fret notes and hit the strings. Not worry about if you'd sound better with 10's as opposed to 9's.

That Dick Dale signature guitar is pretty cool. I've never really tried those Fender acoustics. My experience is with the cheaper models which don't impress me. How is that one sounding to those higher up models?

I honestly wouldnt know, I'm a ludite in the acoustic world. The only acoustics I've ever owned were the nylon stringed one my sister was given and then gave up on. (you know the sort 5 mile high action and plastic tone). I had to master a twelvebar in E on it before I was allowed a electric. And a Ovation that was apparrently quite expensive but had the neck joint caved in so you couldnt tune it above low C.

As far as Im concerned its got a really nice sound. Hit a note and its like a million things are going on underneath the tone of the note. It's really lively but balanced across the bass and treble ends. I havent thought about picking up a electric since it landed.

I'm feeling very smug to have it in my possesion without having to part with cash. Very smug indeed.

I saw this model being played at the Winter NAMM show by Dick Dale. Its funny because he is a lefty and he played the right handed guitar like yours. Its making me rethink Fender Acoustics

I do not think guitars sound better because they are played more. What I do think:

1) Heavily played guitars are often heavily played because they sound good in the first place.
2) Some guitars will sound better with age regardless of being played or not due to the natural aging process.
3) Heavily played guitars are often more "comfortable" than a guitar that is not yet broken in.

My $0.02...

could be something with the pickups aging and the neck maybe getting worn or something on heavily played spots?

If you set up a guitar - electric or accoustic, old or new, cheap or expesive - to get the best sound and the best playerbility out of that instrument you will have a guitar that is - in the majority of cases - good in sound quality and feel.
Setting up a guitar for its optimum sound and playerbility outways the notion as to whether a guitar is better simply because it is old or even of good quality.
When you pick up a guitar that is set up very well you will play it for much longer a time. The attraction of very good sound and feel will promot greater intesity in your playing in such a way to include those mistical forces we atribute to feel. And as we all know the more you play the better you get.
So its more down to how well the guitar feels and sounds based on its setting up and what can be done with it. And what you can do with it.
You can only do so much with a bit of wire on a piece of railroad track, after that you'll have to develop it... into something like... a guitar.
