Hello.

I have a 2008 fender american standart. I realized that after changing the strings last night that on the G string, the frets after 14th fret have less sustain than the other strings and also less sustain than the other frets on G string.

Could you help about the reason and how to solve the problem?

Thanks.

sounds like the pickups are set too high.

Exactly. As you press down on the higher frets, you are bringing the string closer to the pup magnets where the magnetic field is attracting the string and not letting it freely vibrate. Lower the pups and see what happens.

What brand and gauge of strings did you put on?

Did you know the brand and gauge that was previously installed?

It's likely that the neck is shimmed incorrectly or that the microtilt has been used without need.

Best get it in to someone to look at it.

You must have switched to a lighter string gauge. The staggered pole pieces on the pickups are pulling the string down. Lower your pickups a tad.

If its fretting out at the 14, you need to raise the saddle just a tad.

The brand of strings is elixir 010. The previous ones are daddario 010.

How can this fix with microtilt? By turning the screw clockwise or counterclockiwse?

Thanks.

I dont know which way to turn the screw. I'd take the neck off and completely take the microtilt out of the pocket. If the guitar has one. It could just be incorrectly shimmed.

I think you turn the microtilt screw anticlockwise as you look at the rear of the guitar. Your better off to take the strings and the neck off completely first though. If I'm wrong and you go wrenching that screw round the wrong way, you'll ruin the guitar.

I don't want to be "captain obvious" here but if you have just replaced the strings and you haven't touched anything else and you know something is up.

Check the strings first. Changing string brands is going to change your tone. You need to be positive that this is a new problem since the string change.

If it is simple go get another string of the same gauge and test it in that spot.

Please list the exact type of the strings as there is several different D'addario and Elixir 10s. Did you buy them online from where? or from a store?

I recommend doing a proper test to see how long it is sustaining for.
Use an auto tuner plug it into the guitar and turn all the volume and tones up. Try it on different pickup selections.

Mute the strings before starting and play all the EBGDA's on the string and see how long they ring out. Further down the neck - the less sustain. The thinner the gauge of string you play - the less sustain.

The EBGDA's are best because they will should up on the tuner hopefully.
If your not sure where they are just play down the string :).

Check the G strings saddle and make sure its ok and the string is breaking (clearing) over the saddle like the others. Also see if the string touching the saddle twice as this can mute it.
