Ok guys, here is what I dont get. I showed pics of four guitars, to identify which one didnt have the rolled edges.

Here are the results:

Picture 4 got the most votes at 50%. Interestingly enough, it is a Am. Deluxe strat and was voted the most unlikely to have rolled edges.

Picture 1 came in 2nd at 25%. Interestingly again, it is a Strat Plus.

Picture 2 came in last at 6%, it is a Strat Ultra.

Picture 3 however, came in third at 18%. The third guitar had no rolled edges, and is the latest addition to my strats and is my 'player' as I wont feel guilty if I knock it and I can modify it. This is the guitar that of all four, was third least likely to have rolled edges, believe it or not. It prove my arguement that the feature is a bit of a placebo I guess in the sense that you wouldnt know about it if you werent told or was completely unaware about it.

Interestingly this guitar actually feels like 'home' to my hands and my playing, and thats something the others lack when I play them. It is also a modern version of my first Fender.

A MIM Standard Floyd Rose Strat:

Ceri- some of the frets seem to have a slight gap between the fret and the finger board between frets 6-14. I have my bridge set flush to the body and I like my action med-low but not too low. (mind you, this guitar hasnt been set-up to 'my' settings at all)

Ive given this one a good play- chords, single notes and bent notes ring with no buzz or choking, notes sustain all up the neck. As I have said this guitar has had very little play and has no fret wear at all, even down on the first three frets.

Strange though- perhaps I shall take it to a tech for a set-up... :?

Nah, don't sweat it man.

All it means is that the fret was sitting a little high in the slot when it was first installed, and so has been levelled and dressed like that. So if it were now tapped down further into the slot it would actually sit low compared to the others.

It's where the tops are that counts. If it plays fine - it's fine! :D

BTW: regarding the poll results, I refer you to my speculations in my first post. The right answer was my... second guess. I think we all spotted that number four is a Deluxe - but it sure doesn't have very curvy corners to the fingerboard, does it?

I wonder if all of this tells us something about rosewood. The difference between rolled and non-rolled is very obvious on my maple fingerboards. However, I have an old Squier rosewood 'board, and if I were to take a photo of it we'd all have exactly the same troube deciding whether it is meant to be rolled or not (it isn't, obviously, being a Squier). Maybe rosewood gets rounded more quickly by the hands, or perhaps it just doesn't take quite such a sharp corner in the first place?

Curious. And an interesting test - thank you!

Cheers - C

So much for my detective skills... If I'd only glanced down at your list in the signature I would have answered my own question about the year of the deluxe.
