So on two of my guitars the pots crackle really bad. I was going to gut them and solder in new ones. The question is I don't know which ones to get and I can't remember but I think there are different pots your supposed to use for single coils and humbuckers. One guitar is a HSS and the other a HH. could somebody toss me some info? Thx

Well, the old pots should say what they are, you just might have to scrap off some solder to see it. Is it for the volume control or tone? Or both?. You could also try a little contact cleaner to see if that helps get rid of the noise.

Typically, single coil is 250k and hum is 500k.

Full sized humbuckers usually fare best with 500K ohm audio pots all around whereas single coils usually fare best with 250K ohm audio pots all around. This is the usual, common setup although it is not an 'in stone' thing.

Of note: The resistance value of a volume pot makes more of a difference than a tone pot in terms of how the pickup(s) will sound.

With the HSS, your simplest way out is to use a 500K ohm audio volume pot and two 250K ohm audio tone pots.

I'd opt for the contact cleaner first as it could just be a bit of dust or moisture in your pots,a much cheaper option, not very expensive at Radio Shack.

Sounds like a dirty pot. Same thing happens to vintage wah pedals, dirty pots equal scratchy tone...
