Here's a pic of my first guitar. I bought it new in 1987. It's a MIJ squier. Still a great guitar and it's in mint condition. All original, except the knobs and covers, but I still have the originals around here somewhere.

Ha yeah I've seen a few of those too! there even rarer:) and its got the system one trem too. i cant remember the exact details but theres very little difference in the two guitars and its pretty much only the name thats seperates them.

I have 3 80's MIJ Strats. I love the 80's MIJ's and I'm looking to add to my collection of them.

Hey Dude,
I could be wrong here but I don't think that's a Contemporary (unless you changed the body?)...if I'm not terribly mistaken, most, if not all of the Contemporary's had either the System I or System III trems...the one there in the picture doesn't. Me thinks you just have an '85 E series there...although there's certainly nothing wrong with that :-).

Peace,
Jim

I'm not one of the experts here... but I've read nothing but good things about the Japanese Strats on these forums. Most folks "in the know" seem to prefer them over the MIM for better fit/finish/over-all quality. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I were in the market.

Still love my black MIM Powerhouse though. 8)

I prefer my MIJ's over MIA's too!!

Jim is correct. Contemporary models used the System I, II, or III Trems.
I would have to see more pics (headstock, back of neck, etc) to tell what model that is.

Hey guys I know there not going to be hugely popular due to them no longer being made but wheres the Love for Japanese Strats?
I've looked around at all three (MIM,MIA.MIJ) And everyone likes the Mexicans and Americans but the $@!'s are always over looked despite superb build quality and at one point the System one trem, Anyone own one by chance if so let me know im pretty much a fan boy to the things.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the MIJ's and have been for some time now. At the moment I have an '85 Squier E series and I'm in the (slow) process of putting together a Contemporary...I got the body and the System I trem but I'm still working on a neck (which due to some unforeseen family issues, is going to have to wait a while longer).

Personally I have to agree that I think the MIJ's...at least the mid 80's models were really of a very excellent quality...very nice instruments to say the least. My '85 Squier really does compare very well with my '96 MIM and honestly if you compare the workmanship between the two, the MIJ has much cleaner routing and such. That's not to say that my MIM is bad by any means...she's still my "#1" but my '85 Squier really is my #2 any more...just a really sweet ol' lady!

Since you mentioned the System I's, I do have to say I'm a huge fan of those but given a choice I do prefer the System III...same basic animal but the III allows you to make adjustments to the individual saddle height without using shims as you need to with a System I. Regardless, I've never been a fan of Floyd Rose trems...they're just way too much of a pain in the butt. I've always been a Kahler fan myself and I guess that's what I like about the System I and III trems...although the design is certainly different, they have a similar feel (to me at least) as a Kahler. I have heard that the System I trems do have a tendency for the fine tuners to strip out...and I've certainly seen a few on Ebay like that, but of the all the MIJ strats I've played over the years, I've never ran in to this myself.

Anyways, as you can see you're not along in being a fan of the MIJ's...Fender Japan really has put out some very fine instruments over the years! I'd love to play one of the new ones but being here in the US, it seems rather unlikely unless I can find a decent used one that's been brought over.

Peace,
Jim

I have not played very many MIJ Stratocasters, but my local Best Buy has a Japanese made JM sig Jazzmaster that could be the coolest Fender that I have ever played. If anyone has one, I would trade my MIA Standard strat 2008 across the bat for it.
