Hi all,

Can anyone help me? I’ve just brought another MIM strat, this one came with no pickups or machine heads, so i brought it cheap. I have installed some fender locking machine heads, and have brought some Seymour Duncan pickups for it. This is going to be my first attempt installing pickups!! Can you help?

I have the following, JB humbucker for the bridge, SSL6 for the middle and a Lil 59 for the neck. I like to use just one volume and one tone, I also have the standard 5 way switch and 2 500k CTS posts.

Would THIS be the correct diagram to use? I’m not that great at wiring (it’s been a long time since I used a soldering iron). But it looks straight forward enough. Just looking for tips and does and don’ts really, also my input jack has a white and black wire, does the white go to the volume pot terminal and the black is soldered to the top of the pot?

Welcome.

Of course we can help you!

This is the correct diagram:

The wires of the input jack are as you've described.

Don't forget the capacitor.

Good luck and if you run into any problems, just yell!

Oh well as I thought, something had to go wrong! I wired everything up as per the diagram. However the volume knob does not go from mute to full volume, it starts at about ¼ volume then when turned fully it goes to full volume, I’ve been over every solder connection, and everything is as the diagram, any hints at all?

If you installed one of those treble retention circuits, remove it.

Also check that the terminal which gets soldered to the back of the pot is adequately done.

Can I be stupid and ask which party is the treble retention circuit, I have checked all solder points everything seems well soldered on.

That's an added capacitor and resistor on the volume control. Evidently, you didn't use one or you'd know what I meant.

Can you post pictures of your work?

Hi!

I would post a pic, but I'm ashamed of my soldering skills, although I'm sure I've done everything right.

Looking back, what I would like it to have it wired up without a tone, just 1 volume.

I've got a 500k pot, standard 5 way switch, and I'm still going to use a JB in bridge, SSL6 in the middle and a 59 jr in the neck, however I can't find a diagram for this. I really want to do this, but my skills are lacking it seems!

Use the same diagram as above. The only difference is to unwire the lead from the tone pot at the volume pot and if you are removing the tone pot outright from the pickguard, unsolder its ground wire too.

Oh, and for what its worth, even though you say your soldering job is shameful, I wouldn't worry about it. I've probably seen every hideous wiring known to mankind. Believe me when I say this: I can guarantee you, it won't phase me one way or the other.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to have both H-buckers on in one position (3) or just outside coils What????

Just plain old hum single hum, with a 5 way switch, so position's 2 and 4 are neck and middle and bridge and middle. none of that fancy coil splitting stuff. Oh and just a single volume pot, no tone. I'm going to start this now I'm back from work!

I'll have to upload a picture of my handy work as something is not right, I am getting the same problem, the volume will not roll back to mute, it sort of half cranked open when roll all the way back. that's two different pots i've used now, it must be something i'm doing. I'm only wiring it up to 1 volume, no tone controls what so ever.
