Hi Guys,

I have an American HSS 2008 Strat and want to return to single coil pickups, can anyone tell me if the the body routing on my guitar is HSH? I think it is but just wanted verification that single coils will fit.

Thanks!

Absolutely. Many Fender guitar are actually routed for HSS or HSH configurations. All you need is a new pickguard. What you're wanting to accomplish is a very common thing. I almost did the same, but sold the guitar instead....

Pickups are mounted to the pickguard, so it won't be an issue if the rout is too big. the problem only occurs when looking to plop a humbucker into a body routed for only single coils.

Best of luck. The only minor detail might be a slight touch of hollow body. I've heard SRV had a model that was routed out for three humbuckers which he covered up with single coils but produced a mile hollowbody sound....

Thanks man!

I just found this:

Since 1998, many high-end US-made Fender Stratocasters such as the American Deluxe, American, Hot Rodded American, American Special and American Standard series came with an HSH pickup rout instead of a "swimming pool" (or "bath tub") cavity to increase the total amount of wood that actually can resonate, producing a more complex tone. The HSH rout allows players to modify their pickups to the most often seen after-market configurations without re-routing or cutting into their guitar's body, while maintaining more wood than a "swimming pool" rout.

Cool!
