Hi guys,

I am hoping to be purchasing a new American Fender Stratocaster at the end of the year (yes, I know, it is a long way off yet but I have already started to make my decisoins on exactly what models I would go for :D ) and have so far narrowed it down to two possible choices, the American Standard and the American Deluxe.

I am more edging towards the Standard at the moment, simply due to the fact that I already own a Strat which is equiped with the S1 system and various other 'Deluxe' features, and was thinking of getting something that I could keep a little more 'traditional'. Also, I am not too keen on the Abalone fret markers (I know this is not a very good reason, but none the less, I do prefer the standard dots).

Anyway, to my actual question, I have always fancied a Strat in Aged Cherry Sunburst. Unfortunately, this is not a colour that they offer the Standard in (although they do actually offer it in the similar Sienna Sunburst, but for me, it just isn't as nice). Is it at all possible to simply order a Standard Stratocaster in a different colour (Aged Cherry Sunburst)? I understand that if it is, there would obviously be an extra cost involved, but, how much extra could I expect this to be?

The Custom Shop make a very nice Custom Deluxe Stratocaster, which is available in the Aged Cherry, but it is quite an expensive instrument to say the least and I hardly think my request would be a job that required the custom shop.

Thanks in advance for any advice or information,

Russ

'at the end of the year'....how long does it take to choose a guitar lol? 12 months has got to be a record...

I think the short answer is no, you'd have to go custom shop. But, you could also buy a standard of any colour and then takeit to a luthier who could refinish it...

Or buy a Warmoth body in that colour and buy genuine USA fender neck and parts to complete....

LOL, I know!!

I was actually planning on getting a used example this year but decided to wait and go for a brand new one. It's left me plenty of time to decide

You're local luthier should be able to paint your strat in any color you want for around $300. You could do it yourself at your own risk for much less. You'll find some great tips on the thread "Touching up Nikininja's body‏".

No, the only way to get a standard issue in a color not offered is through the custom shop.

Ditto to what straycat said,it would be very impractical and expensive for Fender to pull a guitar out of the production line to do a one off paint scheme and that cost would have to be passed on somehow hence the Custom Shop option ,after all that was the whole idea of the Custom Shop to give guitarists the oppurtunity to have a one of a kind instrument.

I guess everyone can agree, pay a couple thousand for Fender to repaint your guitar, or just have a really good guitar tech do it for 70% less... Good option too is to buy a used Fender. The local Guitar Center where I live has a nice black MIA for $599. If that guitar was there when I bought my Roadhouse, I'd walked away with the MIA. You'll find good deals on used MIA's and you can use the $$$ you saved on a new paint job rather then spending big money on a CS Strat.

Some retailers order special runs from Fender in non-standard colors.

If you are lucky (real lucky), you might find an FSR in the color you want.

Gotta keep looking ...

That is very possible, but like anyone who has G.A.S will know, we have no patience to wait for the right guitar to show up. We buy what we can, then when something else comes along, we keep on spending!!!

Yeah, GAS doesn't wait.

Rust never sleeps.

Can we ever be so lucky?

So very true! Rusty guitars means years of sweat and neglect! Perfect relic'd guitar!

Does the Custom Shop make custom one-off guitars with wacky paint jobs and other fancy woods than the usual timbres (jelutong)? It's also possible to order a guitar with the Clapton Boost circuit, enhanced pickup switching and an abalone inlaid figured maple neck with the late 1959 backshape?

These features are very common with James Tyler's own boutique creations such as the superstrat-like Studio Elite and the Stratocaster-style Classic LA Studio.

Fender used to make the Splatter Guitar. That was about as wild and crazy as they come....

From what I've been hearing you can order jst about anything within reason from the Custom Shop especially if it was put in a previous guitar and I suppose that goes for paint also but you should be prepared to pay top dollar for it as these luthiers no doubt get paid top dollar for their skill and craftsmanship so consequently the price will be accordingly high.
