I am going to upgrade the pickups on my MIM strat. Does anybody have any favorites? I like the FAT blues tone. Any info would be very helpful.

I'm not sure if anyone knows this but acme [they sell pickups online] has a section where they have a bunch of the best pickups put into the same strat,This lets you hear the differance yourself.I have to say my opinion has changed,I'm sold on the custom shop 69's.

Years ago I put some Lace Sensors in my MIM strat and suddenly it had the tone of much more expensive strat. Check em out.

I've purchased several sets of custom wound pickups from Owen Duffy. Check out ocduffpickups.com. Tell him what you want and he'll provide several options. After a few emails back and forth (or maybe a phone call), he'll make what you want.

HI! I just installed a set of copperhead pups, these are handwound to vintage specs! I have the 1959 non reverse wound mid set, I play mostly blues, but these can handle anything, sound incredible and are only $135 a set !!! check out copperheadpickups.com.

I upgraded all my pickups on my American Strat and am very happy with the results. I had installed all Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Noiseless pickups. The neck position is an "Area '58, the middle is a "Virtual Blues" and the bridge is a "Virtual Vintage Solo Pro". I also had the pots changed to 500k and the Eric Johnson wiring scheme with the neck and bridge wired to tone controls. No tone control was needed for the middle. It sounds like a vintage strat but without the noise. I highly recommend it. Go to Dimarzio.com, they have audio samples of all the pickups. Happy shopping!

I have several Strats, and have found I like EMG pickups. They have a nice clean clear sound, and will overdrive an amp nicely for the blues sound you like. EMG-SA strat pickups are sooo sweet to my ear, but everyone like something different. The nice thing is that pickups are not too expensive, so you can change what you don't like without losing too much $$$.

Okay I'm double posting my reply from another thread- I think your tonal needs are pretty close to what you want as well.

The 69' Set is a fantastic set of pickups- I think they are pretty close to what you want.

I also have some personal experience with some other nice pickups:

I can first recommend Kinman pickups- they are hand wired and wound by a gentleman in Australia. I have had personal experience with the Kinman AVn Blues pickups- lots of midrange detail to the pickups, but also have very sweet highs (something tells me you don't want a ton of high end but you want definition in the tone). As a bonus, they are dead quiet. I hate the Vintage Noiseless pickups that came with my Clapton Strat, and the Kinmans work great- plus the noiseless capabilities of the pickups mean I can use the midboost without a ton of noise.

And of course, Fralin. I have a set of their Real 54's installed in my G&L Legacy. I tend to favor weaker pickups so I can get more out of the amp, so these are perfect for me. They are pretty quiet, but unlike Kinman tey aren't going for noiseless sounds- Lindy accepts there will be some 60 Cycle hum, but the pickups come with the reverse wound middle pickup.

I would like to say though that the body woods of the guitars affect my tone- my CS Strat is fit with Texas Specials and it still is my favorite guitar in terms of tone. But it also has a birdseye maple neck which makes the guitar sound a little brighter, as does the ash body. My G&L, though, is alder with a rosewood fretboard, so it balances the brighter sounding 54's with the smoother quality of the woods.

I went to the Kinman site and tried to sign up there, but I waited two days to get the confirmation email and it never arrived. i tried again and checked my on line email account to make sure it wasn't stripped by the spam filter and still no confirmation email. Ahyone else had this problem?
