I'm trying to start my daughter on the basics... Chords and progressions. It will work for both electric and acoustic. However, she has pointed out several country songs which the guitar is acoustic. But she likes the look of the electric. While I don't mind teaching her those songs as I learn them, she has this instant gratification (as in, if she can't play it right away, its too hard to learn)...

I'm stuck in two ways with her...

hey lomitus- sounds like we took lessons from the same teacher!

my first two years of lessons were songs like you mentioned. i was lucky enough to have a teacher who mixed in some rock to play with the "classics". i was exposed to many different types of musi over the years, but i still feel i'm a better rock player than a jazz or country player, but that is cuz i still love r&r, and play it more than other types of music.

parents- let the kids play some of their music- it will help keep their interest.

Ok here's the songs he plays

Layla - Derek And The Dominos

Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix - that was the part where he was muting the strings, he needed the wah wah pedal. He actually took my wah pedal and has it hooked up to his amp, but I don't he really uses it any.

Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - This is one of the songs he likes because of Rock Band or Guitar Hero

China Girl - David Bowie - This is one of the songs he hears me playing and asked how to play it.

Hoochie Coochie Man - Clapton - This is one of the songs he hears me playing and asked how to play it.

White Men in Black Suits - This is the one he never really word cause it has the F word in it, but liked it cause I played it.

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream - another song he likes because of Rock Band or Guitar Hero.

In his guitar lesson tonight they asked each kid to name a song that they would like to learn and they would look into it and see if it's not to hard for them to learn. I guess a few kids were like naming Taylor Swift songs and my son said Paranoid by Black Sabbath. lol I myself am not a Black Sabbath fan, but this is another one of the songs he knows because of rock band or guitar hero.

You know I played Hendrix, ACDC and Rage against the Machine listening for that scratching/muting and I couldn't remember where I heard it.

Nothing wrong with the Sabbath.

I guess that it would have been great if you would find yourself doing a good guitar lesson for your son. In some ways, it would help your son to learn how to play it and would excel in the future. I hope that it would be for good in that one!

I am 50 years old and first started playing at 17. Got a les paul knock off. This was b4 the internet age of course.. So the only thing we could do Is hack around and show each other what we figured out.It didn;t work out to well. So I wanted to take lessons. One of my friends said all they do is teach you scales and theory. Since I wanted to play SONGS not scales, I did not take lessons and have regretted it ever since. So I highly recommend lessons. He needs to know that any artist he likes just didn't randomly throw notes together and have a song. There is a method to the madness. A good teacher will get him started on the right track.
