What steps should be taken to use a right handed Strat as a lefty?

Is it just reversing the nut and re-stringing? How big a deal is to reverse the nut or replace it reversed?

Ceri, Nikininja, KTM/BMW????

Thank you in advance :-)

Shouldn't be much of a problem. I took a lefty and converted to a righty. Just flip the nut, re-string, tune, and set intonation.

You need a new nut. Unless the nut was really poorly made in which can you might be able to salvage it. You can buy premade nuts online however a lefty may limit your choice.

Of course you can just flip it like the above poster suggested but a properly made nut tapers down and out towards the tuners.

To install the nut there is a few tips and tricks in getting them out and putting them in. First a Stanley or X-acto knife to cut the lacquer around the old nut for easy removal. A small chisel is handy for scraping the old glue out. You need a nut file set to make fine adjustments and some wood glue to hold it back in place.

That is it. Unless you want lefty pots and a lefty bridge etc.
A luthier or nut making setup tech should charge between $50-100 for it.
The guitar will have to be fully setup after you have replaced the nut and restrung.

I converted my lefty MIM Strat to right by very carefully popping out the nut and reversing it and putting on new strings and adjusting the intonation. A relatively easy job,of course you have to move the strap button also.

Thank you for the input and tips. It's good to know that if ever I find a Strat that only comes right handed there are options to make it playable for me.

Doesn't sound too hard at all.

There are no right or left handed nuts. They come squared off and you have to shape them yourself.
