hi,

i have an american deluxe ash and was thinking about changing pups to get more of a Gilmour sound.my guitar has the SCN pups and the s1 switch but if i had to eliminate the s1 thats fine.any advice would be great.

Leave your guitar alone :!: Hopkins and I, among others on the Forum, own the Gilmour guitar and can testify to the fact that just that won't do it.
In fact, with the SCN's on your Deluxe, and the S-1 system, you'll likely have more at your disposal with respect to a choice of tonal colors to choose from, than if you mucked it up.

The reason Gilmour went to the EMG's years back was because as the complexity of lighting technology they were using for their staging increased, so did the RF interference with the pickups in the Black Strat.
And since Fender, then a Phoenix rising from the ashes, invited him to sample two of their new '57RI Strats, the venture eventually gave rise to what we now call "The Red Strat" which he used for over twenty years, while the "Black Strat" went on loan to the Hard Rock Cafe.

There's a band called "Project Floyd" which performs at Five Towns College here on Long Island every summer, They do a consummate job, in the sense of what 'lomitus' had to say, with a stock Ernie Ball, and a Fender Stratocaster.

Doyle Bramhall II tells of learning that Roger Waters was planning on touring "The Wall." Bramhall owned a cassette recorder which would eliminate the lead guitar track on playback. So with that, he set about learning all the guitar parts for "The Wall" cold, auditioned, and got the gig. You can find some of that on YouTube. Have a listen to what the two guitarists on that tour put down. Bramhall playing left-handed on a reversed, upside-down, right handed Stratocaster, ala Albert King.

As an aside, if you want to hear a unique sound, listen to Arc Angels, and some of Bramhall's other work, such as "Welcome." Clapton and BB King do two Bramhall songs on "Riding With The King." You can recognize his musical form immediately.

There's been more than enough on this thread and who knows how many others in the past two years regarding chasing sound. To understand some of the impossibilities you should get a hold of as many Gilmour DVD's as you can and watch those hands, and how so much of that is generated by the use of a steel guitar, sliding, string bends in both directions, subtle use of trem, and changes in pickup selection. These, not to mention his new Peter Cornish floorboard, and the rest of the rack standing behind him.

Take particular note of Tim Renwick's following guitar solo, using nothing more than a stock Strat Plus, in "Another Brick in The Wall-Part 2 on the "Pulse DVD". Listening to the CD alone, you would think it were Gilmour, but no! Take note of the techniques, including the tapping with fingers and guitar pick.

So what we are saying here is that a capable musician, with the right feel, and the complementary gear, can find the tone from heaven. . Even yourself, in fact.

There's no arguing how BIG that sound is, and what one internalizes from it. So the emotional component which motivates you is understood by us all, otherwise we wouldn't be here as a group, sharing as we do.

Here's one from our history here which they left out

www.tonefromheaven.com. When you've digested the gear used on the "On An Island" project, which I likely the same as used in "Gdansk", you'll appreciate the complexity of your quest.

Dude...you posted the same link for both videos!
BTW...is it just me or is Geldof reading the first verse off a lyrics cheat sheet? LOL!
Please repost the link for the SRV on the Flying V...I'd love to see that!
Peace,
Jim
OK, here you go, tested this time, SRV says its the first time playing Rivera Paradise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNGCj0FC6EE

and yeah, Geldof IS using a cheat sheet! I thought that was pretty bad, since they have supposed to have done the song a few times already

Gilmour is a good choice as an inspiration and a while back I was doing Shine On for a gig, here is what I learned, probably repeating what others have said.

1) The only man who truly sounds unmistakeably like Gilmour is Gilmour. Imagine:

Give Gilmour a guitar and amp, now give Knopfler a guitar and amp. Ask them both to play one at a time. Each sounds unmistakeably like the they should. Now ask them to swap axes. Gilmour will sound like Gilmour on the Knopfler rig and visa-versa.

2) Gilmour is very wealthy man who has all the time of the day of every day to work on his tone and the mullah for any kit he wants. You may also have these things. But you ain't Gilmour. He has also been tweaking this tone thing for 40 years.

3) There are lots of helpful articles that people have posted already BUT his rig is designed for stadia and unless you are playing MSG anytime soon, it aint gonna sound that way in ya bedroom :) He uses specific effects for specific tasks on specific rigs with enough wattage to kill the average guy.

4)When you listen to Pulse or Delicate Sound of Thunder, you are also hearing the mix, mastering EQ and Comp together with the ambience of the enormous venue. If you listen to The Wall, alot of that was DI to the desk.....

5) If you ever nail his tone, you still won't be happy cos you still can't nail the enormous organ/synth sample at the start of Shine On.

6) The closest I ever got to his tone was with a beat up old Yamaha axe with dual humbuckers.

7) EMG-DG20's reportedly sound good out of the box, but again are designed for countering stadia lighting.

8) Listen to the first solo of "This Heaven". That's Gilmour. Without a shadow of a doubt its Gilmour. On a Gold Top LP.

Good luck!
He has also been tweaking this tone thing for 40 years.

Ditto!! Pink Floyd's was to explore and break new ground in the use of sound and light. Performance art at it's best. It's what made them unique. 8)

There's enough detailed information in the preceding responses to keep that bloke busy (and penniless if he chooses to pursue it) for a long time.

It depends on how much you want to spend on the test bed. From there you can go to hell in a handbasket if the road rises up to you, I expect. The current production guitars are all routed for HSH pickups regardless of what the electronics are., and have modern "C" neck carves. So Squier, MIM Fender, or MIA Fender, take your pick.

On a personal note, if you want an EMG DG-20, find your self as inexpensive a used Artist Series Clapton as you can. That will give you a spot for the battery, a vintage routing except for the rout made for the Clapton mid-boost board which you won't require, a great neck, vintage frets, AND, if you can get your hands on a red one, unblock the trem, take off a spring or two to lighten the load, and oila!!...The Red Strat!!

You can even remove the signature decal from the headstock if you care to.

Aftermarket modding is as limitless as your mind can conceive. (Consider Ceri's reworking of the horrorshow Strat body he was sent.) There have been many project guitars shared on this website.

Creativity abounds. 8) Keep us posted.

Doc
