Hi all

I just bought a new Custom Shop 60’s Relic, Vintage frets and 7.25 Inch radius fingerboard. What a beautiful guitar.
I love it in every way except 1 - The choking of the strings when bending E and B strings above 12th fret, I know that this is almost a “feature” of a 7.25. The shop staff set it up so I could bend a tone and thought I’d be happy. However even with this set up I can hear the string start to choke and vibrate on the next fret after bending about half a tone and I don’t like it..

My dealer did say they would help me out with swapping the guitar for something else if I wanted to. But after trying about 15 custom shop guitars this was the one that suited me “almost” perfectly in terms of Neck profile, looks, feel and sound. None of the others were close to this Gem.

So discussing this with the dealer he suggested taking it in to his Tech (about a 2 hour drive each way) and getting him to optimize the set up (check the Nut slots and take as much relief out of the neck as possible) but also potentially level out some of the higher frets under the D&G strings. I spoke to the tech and he said he may be able to squeeze some more out of it, but also with the vintage frets there is not a lot of height to play with.

Has anyone had this fret leveling done before on a 7.25 with vintage frets.
Would you recommend it? Did it resolve the problem?
Note I don’t need to go more that a tone bend.

Any comments/advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Sparky

Hey Sparky...
One of my Strats has a 7.25 radius as well. I recently had it re-fretted with Dunlop stainless steel 6105 fret wire. Its a narrow, taller fret and I think its solved my fretting out problem all together. Yes, I needed a new nut as well to handle the taller frets. Like you, I love this Strat!
It a 70's olympic white.

One of my Strats has a 7.25" radius with vintage frets and if I keep checking the truss rod and setup, it doesn't give me any problems.

I have no problems with mine either. Proper setup is the key.

Put the strings no lower at the high E-string then 2mm, measured at the
12th fret. Low E-string 2.5mm.
I've used this set-up for 30 years now and have no problems with bending
the high strings.
