I drove to Guitar Center through torrential rain to play American Specials yesterday. I played the HSS and SSS Strats and two Teles. I'm planning on buying one today, if I'm not busy building an ark. :)

The SSS Strat's calling to me the loudest.

The red Strat I played had a very light maple neck. I don't think it was tinted at all.

I bought a 2 Color Sunburst SSS American Special Strat Friday. I thought about waiting for a Candy Apple Red one but patience isn't one of my virtues when GAS is involved.

It's wired like my Jimmie Vaughan Strat, with tone control for the neck and bridge pickups and the middle pickup left wide open. The Greasebucket circuit works well with the Texas Special pickups and it sounds great through my '65 Twin Custom 15 Reissue amp. I am addicted. :)

Congrats, John ... Happy New Guitar Day to you!

We have completely sold out of all the Fender American Specials at the GC I work in ... both the Strats and the Teles. I hope we get more in quickly ... this great axe is gonna be a HOT SELLER!

I am aiming for either the CAR or the all-black HSS (I already have two MIM SSS Strats with maple fretboards ... time for a rosewood, I think. It's going to have to wait though ... next up on my personal GAS list is the Special Edition HH Jaguar!

Wouldn't have expected any less from the American Special considering how similar they are to the Highway 1 :P

That telecaster looks excellent, I knew about them but had never seen or played one. Having now heard that they're so nice in person I might have to take a gander and try one out.

Went the the local shops today. One shop (GC) only had the HSS models, the black one looks really nice. I was really hoping to see the SSS model, but they did not have one in yet. The other store did not have one in yet, but expect some in an a week or so.

I did not like the humbucker in the HSS models I played. The other pickups are awesome.

All I can say is wow. Nice looking guitar. I wish the stores I went to today had a SSS model.

Thanks, Jim. Friday was a happy new guitar day for sure and it continued all weekend.

I was originally going to hold out for a Candy Apple Red SSS but I'm a sucker for a nice 2 Color Sunburst. :)

I'm really impressed with the finish on the American Special. There is a Precautions and Care for Lacquer Finishes pamphlet in the packet of stuff that came with the guitar and I actually read through it. That's a first.
