Looks more like a Standard model to me. A 50's RI would have a Maple Fretboard.

+1. And the missing walnut "tear" and trussrod hole at the nut means it must be a '60s RI neck - but the one-ply pickguard contradicts that.

Either way, those sure as heck are not reissue tuning machines.

It's been modded, whatever it is.

I really don't think it has been modded. In that time period MIJ Standard Strats were put together with what ever parts were in the bins on that particular day.

Sure - I guess I was speaking to the idea that it was a reissue. Within which case stuff has been changed.

BTW Chet, you know more than most here about MIJs: assuming this is after all stock, did Japanese Fenders of that period have the neckplate cushion I see in a photo, above?

Cheers - C

Good catch Ceri. I missed that cushion completely.

Personally I have not seen a neck cushion on an 80's MIJ. That does not mean they were never on one, I just haven't seen one.

My '85 Squier has the neck plate gasket too and as far as I've been able to determine, my '85 is all original. No idea though if that's really normal for MIJ's or if it's simply part of that whole "parts from the bin" thing...

Jim

I have 3 80's MIJ Strats and none have the gasket. Mine are all Left Handed, I wonder if that made a difference too?

I could most certainly be wrong but somehow I doubt if the left/right hand thing really had anything to do with it as I'm sure they both use the same neck plate and all. My first guess would probably still be the whole "parts bin" theory with whatever they had in stock on a given day/month/year. What's interesting is that before my '85 I never saw any of these gaskets on Fenders...I've seen a few Fender clones with them (namely Cort) but my Squier MIJ was the first Fender I ever saw with one.

Now I suppose it is possible that mine was in fact added sometime later but my '85 really does look to be all original...when I first brought her home and started "inspecting", it really seemed to me as though the neck had never been off that thing (it really was stuck in the neck pocket really well). Also my '85 had VERY little fret wear and only 1 or 2 small scuffs and dings...it really seems as though this guitar had seen very little playing time at all before I got her. That said, when I got her the jack plate was in fact screwed in upside down...which I thought was rather strange but it does indicate that someone had done something to this guitar so I guess it's not out of the question that someone installed the neck plate gasket at a later point too. I guess that's one of the bad things about used instruments is that most often you really don't know much, if anything about the history of the guitar...

Just curious...are any of your MIJ's '85s?

Jim
