I'm coverting my Standard to a Fat Strat and have a dumb question.
Is there a difference between White Pearl and Pearloid when it comes to Pick Guards?
I found a new, genuine Fender, pick guard for $25, but the guy says it's white pearloid.

Thanks

I love those pickguards. I just don't think it'd look good on my two-tone burst...

I think the Buddy Guy signature and a few tele's have pearloid pickguards on burst finishes.

You could check them out to get the basic idea of how it'd look.

However, it seems I can't find the Buddy Guy signature on the products section on Fender website... Only the Polka-dotted Standard version.
Has Buddy Guy Signature been discontinued??

I have a three tone burst and knew I could not go with a white pearloid guard. I went with " aged pearloid". They also have a darker level, cream pearloid.

From what I understand, if it is a genuine Fender product. Then it is white pearloid. I believe the others are not genuine. I don't know if that matters to you though.

Here is mine it is the Genuine Fender White Pearloid on my Brown Sunburst with Rosewood neck.

I just wanted to add a quick note to fhopkins last comment there... If the OP (or anyone else for that matter) should decide to go with an Allparts pickguard, check out one at a store -before- you buy! I was recently up at my local Guitar Center looking for a plain white pickguard for one of my many projects. GC didn't have any plain white Fender pickguards but they did have a couple of Allparts. To come straight to the point, the holes on ALL of the Allparts pickguards did NOT line up with my Strat...they would have required some degree of re-drilling the holes! In fact even the cut of the guard itself was a bit off from a real Fender pickguard...I took a Fender tortoise shell guard off the wall and put it right over the top of the Allparts and it was easy to see they weren't the same (and yes, they were both 11 hole Strat pickguards)...the Allparts simply was NOT an exact replacement.

I don't know if this is an Allparts thing or if perhaps GC just had a "bad batch" (hey...it happens) but I would seriously recommend getting one from a store instead of buying "online" so you can check the screw holes and the alignment and such to make sure it's gonna fit!

Just a quick $.02 worth,
Jim

Mine is Fender Model: 0992140000

I was able to walk in to my local store, they didn't have one so they ordered one from fender, it took a week. And that's from Cali to Canada.

lomitus's comment was the exact reason I went with the Fender, I knew it would fit perfectly. And it did.

I would assume that if your local store doesn't have one, they would be more than happy to get one for you. Oh and I paid $55. A little much, but no hassle.

I remember when the term, "Moto" first came out back in the late 60's. It was short for, "Mother of Toilet" as back then, plastic toilet seats with a, "Mother of Pearl" design were very popular.

The word, "Pearloid" is used to differentiate for those who would honestly believe the pickguard to be composed of real pearl. Yes, they are out there. It's like when one buys a hair dryer nowadays. Inevitably, the instruction manual will warn you to not operate it in the shower as apparently, enough people have tried (to their detriment). So, a disclaimer had to be made.

On a related note, I haven't seen the term, "Tortoiseoid" or similar yet though. I guess the word, "Tortoise" vs. "Turtle" has some inherent distinction. YMMV.

There are also 2 predominant shades of White Pearloid to watch for too. There is a whiter shade of white and a golder shade of white. You can find this out the hard way when you realize that you forgot to buy the trem cover to match the pickguard and then buy one at a different time and find that it doesn't match when you bring it home.

Also Pickguards made for MIM Strats don't line up exactly the same as MIA. So as someone mentioned, when in doubt, get the one with the Fender packaging or if you have a funky configuration you can send your old one out to a number of pickguard makers that will cut you one exactly like your old one with a new pickup configuration. But if it's a standard swap, you'll find the Fender's are more expensive but fit better.

You make a very good point. Unfortunately...people are often REALLY stupid and what's worse is that in this day and age, they can get away with suing others for their own freakin' stupidity. I recently read something about a guy who successfully sued an RV company (Winnebago I think) because he wrecked his brand new RV...he had turned on the "Cruise Control" and then got up and went to the bathroom!!! He claimed that "the RV manual didn't provide information about NOT LEAVING YOUR SEAT WHILE DRIVING ON CRUISE CONTROL".

It really makes me wonder how some of these people have enough brain power to even walk. No...really...I got my dick caught in the zipper of my blue jeans this morning...maybe I should sue Levi's for not having a warning label! OYE!!!!

"A division of reptiles, called chelonians, includes turtles, tortoises, and terrapins. For the most part, the difference between a turtle and tortoise is more of a rough semantic category than a strict taxonomic separation. Colloquially, both biologists and lay people use the word, "turtle" to mean all chelonians. In general, turtles live in or near the water and have adapted to swim by holding their breath underwater. Tortoises live primarily in arid regions, built for storing their own water supply and walking on sandy ground".

How that applies to a plastic pickguard on a guitar I have no idea :?

Peace,
Jim :-)
