haha, yes I brung it on myself...

True, I too never have less than 2 guitars on stage, and even tho I play hard they don't go out of tune much. I like a stomp box tuner tho cos I use it as a mute switch when I swap guitars. Usually there's so much crowd noise and onstage noise that tuning by ear during a show is not a great option, and if I do need to quickly tune up between songs it only takes a few seconds. I can do it while I'm introducing a song over the mic... no sweat.

As for being in tune with other band members, we have a simple solution - we all buy the same tuner, or calibrate them together. My stomp tuner is 'only' accurate to 3 cents, but that's close enough for rock! I'd like a more accurate one for intonation setups, but I do those at home in a very quiet environment, so most of the time my ear is all the fine tuning I need anyway.

When I started we used an orchestral tuning fork backstage, then it was 'give me an E' onstage. It's quicker with a stomp box now.

Attack. And if your using a tuner ditch it, particularly with intonation settings. If you can hear the difference between attack and dwell as a reference it doesnt matter. Its at worst 8 cents.

I should mention that I'm only talking about tuning, not intonation. My Seiko (cheap) tuner is actually highly accurate and helps to pinpoint the tuning.

Also, if it was 8 cents out, it would be pretty much unplayable. (It's easy to hear 2 cents worth of error.)

So thanks, but I'll keep my tuner.

If you can hear 2 cents, considering theres a 100cents between 2 notes (the clue is in the word cent, meaning one hundred). You dont need a tuner.

Now sir when are you available to come and intonate my guitars?

P.S accurate tuning can come very cheaply. I bought this for $8/£6

I dont use anything else now.

As mentioned, I am talking about tuning, not intonation, and yes, I can easily hear 2 cents. And yes, I understand "cent" means 100. I just got my tuner a couple of years ago. For the 45 years before that I/we only tuned by ear. Maybe tuning my 12 string helped. I am not saying I have perfect pitch. I couldn't tell an A 440 from a Q sharp! That's why my tuner is so handy. Also if everyone in the band is using a tuner, theoretically, they should be in the same tune.

The give me an "E" thing works fine. The tuner is just easier and more accurate.

Cheers,

I don't dwell on it.
