The MIM and MIA are both nice guitars but as has been mentioned before the pups are nicer and finish a little better on the MIA. Either will serve most peoples needs. As far as Squire goes I wouldn't buy anything less than a Standard Statocaster. Their actually pretty nice guitars, I recently played a Squire Classic Vibe 50s Strat at GC and was very impressed, not at all a budget guitar. However if money allows I would go with the American Standard.

yea there nice alright......don't think the standard comes in set though! the affinity seems to be the top model in the sets. Yea budget is an issue and the American Standards are so tempting! but I would still havw to get an amp as well...

MIM Fender Strat are great guitars
get one with a stocked bridge humbucker
and you will not need a second guitar

Hi everybody

Thanks for all your advice, it was very much appreciated and a great help to me in choosing my guitar. So here's the update.....

I tried out all the guitars that I could get my hands on from squiers up to new American Standards....

I am thrilled to say that I'm now the proud owner of a used (but in good condition) 1994 Fender American Standard Stratocaster, maple fingerboard and sunburst body colour, as an added bonus it has the 40yr Strat. anniversary logo on the headstock and anniversary stamped neck plate.

It's pure class (imo!) I only hope that I can do the guitar justice by learning how to play it properly.

Thanks again.

Hi there

Just wondering which guitar would be better for a beginner - looking for a good guitar for life for a broad range of music?

Any advice would be very welcome.

You'd get better quality from an American strat, but a MIM is a good value to learn on. Many guitarist I know start with a MIM but end up wanting an American Strat.

Best advice, look for a deal on either one used. Guitar Center's used gear section is better then Ebay. You'll take chances on Craigslist buying American. Just remember American Strats have 22 frets. Check S/N's, check saddles, etc... if its too good to be true, probably is...

yea I agree...was looking for a used MIM with the hope of getting an MIA when I got better at playing, but a good used MIA came my way at a price I could afford (for a bit more cash I got a great guitar) so I checked it out and took the plunge.....very happy now!

You won't be satisfied for life unless you get the MIA. Trust me. No disrespect for MIM.

Ya know fhop....you are right. I hate to admit it. I have a great '08 MIM but I always have that "I wonder what an MIA would sound like if mine sounds like this..." ....and my MIM sounds GREAT!.......  ...I even entered the contest for the MIA and the GDEC 3 over in the lounge.......

Agreed , and really there is nothing wrong with either guitar. You could gig with either .Some choose the MIA because they think its worth it,others choose the MIM because they think the MIM is a better deal.Nothing wrong with either guitar, its the "mine is better" mindset.Bottom line is our choice for guitar is a personal one and there are no right or wrong choices.

as I'm new to the forum i just posted the question not knowing about the past threads......didn't mean to bore the forum regulars.

I did get some great advice and it helped me a lot when looking at buying my first fender strat.

I'm not interested in turf wars....... I just wanted to get the best guitar that I could for my budget, did't mind if it was MIM or MIA,btw both good guitars imo.

The best guitar for a beginner is what ever the budget will allow. Some features are better on the American Standard. The MIM Standard is also a good quality guitar was well. Let's not forget the Squier line either. Very good guitars for the price.

My only suggestion is to try out as many guitars you can, get a feel for them. The one that plays the best and has the best tone within your price range is the one for you. Good luck with your search.

Get the USA made used one, as long as it is in good shape. Better wood, better paint, better electronics, better resale value. Even if you don't maintain the hobby of playing, you can dump a USA made for more money than a used MIM.

And seriously, no disrespect to MIM's. I owned one long ago. Black with a white pickguard. My first Fender. It was a solid guitar in every way....and helped shape my opinion of Fender as the ultimate in guitars. But I like my USA Strat I have now 10 times better...everyone has an opinion....lol.
