Hi there

Just wondering which guitar would be better for a beginner - looking for a good guitar for life for a broad range of music?

Any advice would be very welcome.

The Fender Standard strat (MIM) should be a guitar that you will be able to work with for life.

If your budget allows, an American Standard feels and sounds real fine.

The American Standard Strat has an approved flight case, strap and cable.

I like the pickups on the American model better and quieter compared to the Standard Strat. This is one major consideration.

I have compared the necks between the two as well and there is quite a difference. Some people say there isn't so much perhaps its a quality issue or the eye of the beholder.

Lets face any guitar will see you through if you have the money it is a tiny investment for either guitar. When I mean investment I mean the time you will spend playing it.

Value for money. Well probably the MIM or my personal favorite the Squier (with upgrades).

Thanks for the advice. Sorry, I forgot to say Used American Standard vs New MIM Strat!! (the're about the same price) Budget and ability limitations dictate!!

I was also thinking of a good used MIM for better value for money. I had ruled out the Squier as someone told me that the quality can be hit & miss and you could be lucky and get a good one or on the other hand could be unlucky and.......

I'm interested in finding out more about the Squier with/without upgrades and how it compares with the MIM's.

Thanks

If you can get a used American for the same price as a new MIM standard I say go for it.It will hold its value better and the neck is nicer IMO.

You won't be satisfied for life unless you get the MIA. Trust me. No disrespect for MIM.

I'm lookin' at a 1991 MIA strat not too sure what model...but doesn't have a Fender case..any thoughts on the '91's and what should I look out for when buying a used strat?

My advice is to not buy the first one you run across. Take your time and play many of them before you decide. All MIA or any guitar are not the same. Eventually you will find a guitar that just feels and sound just right for you! YMMV!!

And welcome to the forum! Keep us informed!! :)

Thanks for having the stones to step up and create this thread. No one else has had the guts to pose this question.

Consider the new American Special - they fit nicely in between. 8)

As some have mentioned, play them and see which one feels and sounds good to you. Go with your own ears and fingers to tell you. Oh I guess your eyes will be part of it too.
Since money is about the same for both it's really up to you! :D

I bought a MIM and have been very happy with it.

thanks for the replies...wasn't aware of the american special...whats special about it?

another option that my guitar teacher recommended was to get a Squire pack with amp & accessories to start with and in a few years get the Fender Strat that I really want and I can appreciate it better! Difference in sound and quality acknowledged but more affordable and has everything needed to start and with my current ability level these differences wouldn't be so great until I improve. any views on this?

the guy in the guitar shop recommended the Squire Affinity Fm15G Set includes Fender 15watt amp. anyone got any experience of these packs or the guitars in them?

The MIM and MIA are both nice guitars but as has been mentioned before the pups are nicer and finish a little better on the MIA. Either will serve most peoples needs. As far as Squire goes I wouldn't buy anything less than a Standard Statocaster. Their actually pretty nice guitars, I recently played a Squire Classic Vibe 50s Strat at GC and was very impressed, not at all a budget guitar. However if money allows I would go with the American Standard.
