define outplay.
And while you're at it, define why anybody should care, or why music is a competition where you rate people against each other....

Life aint a competition, and neither is music I reckon.

I googled Terry Kath cause I didn't know who he was. It came up with a guitar player for Chicago, but he's dead. So I would put my money on Clapton.

There is no "the best" player! It's all about style and feeling, and we all feel differently and think differently of course, and have listened and played different kinds of music, so... Oh yeah, and we are all from different sides of the world, and we have different music haritage and tradition. All of that matters, even if we play the same kind of music.
And it's about what you like, not others! So, both Clapton and Terry Kath (I too have never heard of him; and now I read above that he is dead) playe(d) what they like(d) and believe(d) in.
Well, that's just my opinion.

All I can tell you is who I like better, and that would be Clapton.

In that regard, I could outplay Terry Kath too! And SRV, and Jimi - just saying.

Kath committed suicide a long time ago. You can hear Kath on 25 Or 6 To 4 by Chicago. Two very different players.

Clapton and Kath are both great guitarists, but they played different music and so you can't distinguish who is "better"

Personally I prefer Kath's classic rock guitar better than Clapton's bluesy guitar (with the exceptions of Layla, Sunshine of your Love, etc...)

Good Luck with the T-Bass Martian!

I disagree, and with that attitude you are destined for mediocrity. I can promise you that the most respected people at the top of their professions are very competitive. It's what drives them to continually improve what they do.

Not everyone feels the need to out perform others.
Speaking of that, seems a small guitar collection you have. Compared to mine your destined for well... mediocrity.

Get my point?

i think this is not an easy answer post. there many players who are excellent for the band they are in, or great for the type of music you play.

you can take somebody who is at the top of their game in rock, and put them against a great jazz player. pick out a piece of each other's music, and try to play it after 1 listen. you probably wouldn't play it as well as the guy who plays this song hundreds of time a year at gigs, but that doesn't make you a lesser player.

myself, i'm pretty good at 60's and classic rock because i like the music, and play it on a regular basis. if i tried to get into a country or jazz setting, it would definitely take me a while to get up to speed
