Hey new guy here and I am looking at getting a Fender Strat and spending about $ 600.00. I play classic rock, some Jazz some metal (not much) and rock. Any suggestions on models? I have looked and played many models at GC but was looking for some suggestions.

Well, $600 pretty much limits you to the Standards, and the various Deluxe Players models. I would lean towards the Deluxe PLayers - although I noticed on the Musician's Friend site, they have a couple of new models under or just slightly over $600 that look interesting; a Roadhouse, a Lonestar, and the Powerhouse.

I was looking at a couple of those and also trying decide on HSS model or not. Could I get some metal tones out of all SSS?

I haven't tried the Lonestar yet. But have tried several Deluxe models.

I really appreciate the feed back.. Thanks

one option is to find a GC that has an upgraded highway one that there blowing out for around $400 and get them to ship it to you.

if it was me I would find a early 21st century :D origanal american roadhouse off ebay for around that, however since they reissued them the origanal's seem to have gone up alitttle but it may still be possible.
something like this=

oh and GC has the mexican classic players series for super cheap too and its a great guitar on par with the highway one. but its the holiday season so theres no reason to pay full price for one.

basically the deal with this is it is a way to get midi notes out of a guitar. the drawback is you have to buy one of the special roland brand guitar synth modules to plug into that is basically a scaled down roland synth that you plug the guitar into. so paying a premium on both ends.
the plus is that eventhough the roland guitar synths are pretty boring by todays syth standards, the roland guitar synth module should have a midi output on it thereby making it possible to use and syth under the sun that uses midi and not voltage frequincies to talk to each other.
in other words with this guitar and the recommended synth module you could "play" any sythesizer pretty much. that is really cool, although much of the greatness of synthesizers is twiddling the knobs while you play and you obviously couldnt do that.
as far as just using the recommended synth module for sounds it should have all kinds of presets for things like strings, sax, keyboard, etc, that you could play but ive never messed with one of these.
as far as the actual guitar it looks to be a pretty cheap guitar and i think the guitar part is about half the cost and the other half is for the roland stuff.
personally i would not buy it for a main guitar but more as a experimental second guitar. also if you get it i would learn about midi and synthesizers to truly unlock all of its potential.
also i think you can buy a roland pickup like that so you really could make any guitar like that if you wanted to. overall i say you should get a better guitar since that the main perpose and trust me it will make or break how you play and love the stratocaster. that things besides the electronics is kinda cheesy.

Thanks again for the feed back. I think I am heading to Guitar Center again to take a look at the Deluxe & Highway one models. Thanks again, Wayne
