So I have recently purchased 2 guitars. One a 2005 and one a 50th Anni 2004 Strat. (American Strat-Both 3 Tone Sunburst)
One is for Storage and the other is for me to play.
My son was born in 2005 and I want to put away the srat until he is older.
A nice little gift when he turns 21 or something.
Even if he never plays, it would be a nice thing to have from your birth year.

So my problem is this:
The '05 is great because he was born then, but the '04 has the special neckplate and is a 50th anni edition. So which should I put away for him?
Money wise, I assume the '04 will be worth more later, but its not his birth year?
Any suggestions? I can't store both as my wife would throw a fit since I spent so much on them.
Also, any suggestions for Storage. I read somewhere that I sould detune it some steps and to NOT use silica gel? I thought the Silica Gel was a good Idea, but I guess not?
I live in the Bay Area in California so not much in extreme temperatures or humidity.
Anybody know optimal storage conditions?
Thanks.

Hey Man - that is cool that you did that for your son - I just posted a similar story, very similar actually - My son was born in '05 and I found a '05 Sunburst strat for him - I had always wanted to do that if I had a son, so I did - I got lucky and found it - the story is on here somewhere if you would like to read it - im not sure about storing them though - I plan on keeping his around and taking pics of him with it over the years then putting it away until later!

in my opinion:

if its all about the sentimental value, go for the one from his birth year.
its about sentiment, not about dollar values and features...

just my 2 cents.

Store the '05 and play the hell out of the '04. It is a guitar and it was meant to be played. I wouldn't get hung up on the Special Edition thing.

I've got a 04 50th and I say play it and store the 05. Fender made a lot of them so I doubt that there will be that much more value and the "relicitng" may actually help the value down the road. BTW, I'm pretty sure that the anniversary models were a 2 tone burst not a three.

I found your post.
WOW that is freaky how it is the EXACT same story as mine!!!
Scares me really. I have heard about fake guitars.
Heres mine:

I hope its not the same one or serial number!!
When was your son born? Mine was March.
He's definitely a whirlwind of TERROR right now!!
Yeah, I can't wait to whip this out when he is older and see the look in his eyes!
Definitely worth the wait!
We just had a daughter a few months ago. Now I'm thinking of getting an '07!
Maybe one of those Hello Kitty Strats. However, I heard they are junk.
Perhaps a red American.

I'm on the lookout for everything '05. I currently have a ton of sealed packs of sports cards from '05. As well as anything like comic books and such.
I'm getting together a great time capsul for him.
Thanks for sharing the story!

I'm pretty sure it is a 3 tone sunburst. The only thing different is that the neck plate has an engraving on it for the Anni. It starts out with Z4...

I found a similar one here. This is the exact same one I have.

It does look like a three color in the pix but if it's legit it gotta be a two 'cuz that's all they came in (except for a less expensive gold top):

I don't know if a call to customer service would let you verify it or not.

I've got a Deluxe and it's been my favorite player since I got it new.

Ok, I know where we are getting crossed up.
This is not the "Official" 50th anni model. This is just the regular American Series Strat with the commemerative plate.
All production american series strats had the plate in 2004.
So I guess since its nothing special, its going to become my player and the 2005 will go in storage.

I have to agree with most, to store the '05. Frankly, you could play them both. The '05 would be your son's birth year and any wear would be from his Father. I wish I had something like that! I'd detune the strings slightly, maybe one turn. I've heard that simply storing a guitar flat in its case is about as good as it gets. I'd just slide it under the bed, where there is no temperature extremes. Wall hanging or on a stand isn't good for the long run.
