Hello Guys,

First of all i will introduce myself, im Nik 23 years old. I'm playing guitar for about 5 years now. I work in a hospital as a medic, in my free time i like to play the guitar offcourse and enjoy life! I'm from The Netherlands so dont blame me iff my typing is incorrect because of the language.

I have the next Question :

I have just recently bought a Fender american standard strat HSS sienna sunburst. I love the diamondback humbucker, but i still think it doesnt sound fat enought for a humbucker. I heard a guy saying on youtube that the guitar comes equipped with a 250k potmeter, normally humbuckers use a 500k potmeter. Can i chance the potmeter on my strat or isnt it wise and should i get a different humbucker?

Playingstyles : Classic rock,pop,blues,hardrock.

Thanks in advance,
Nik

Welcome to the Forum. As Silverslack mentioned, read that thread. Martian is very knowledgable about guitar tech questions. He helped me with my guitar project converting my Highway 1 SSS to a HSS. I used a Dimarzio Super Distortion for the humbucker. His input on my project was awesome and I have one killer sounding guitar now. Here is my thread on it:

A 500K audio taper pot will be fine for a replacement volume. It is a higher resistance so therefore more highs will hit the amp when moves towards 10. When selecting other pickups they will do the same.

If you want to keep all the single coils 250K get a 500K/250K dual concentric stack pot (with audio taper).

A good trick on the HSS is to wire both singles to the front tone pot (stock 250k), then the Hum to the rear one (500k or 1Meg-ohm audio taper pot). Also, experiment with different cap values to vary the highs (.22uf and lower) or lows (.48uf and higher). Now that you're getting the tone you want, you can also stick a 500k pot on the volume for more hit on the front end of your amp if it lacks that last little bit of bite you're looking for. Not a mod for everybody and certainly not the purists, but you can find the tone you want with a few tweaks and some soldering skills. As usual, if you do not feel comfortable doing this kind of surgery on your guitar, take it to a reputed tech in your area. Cheers!
