This came from Gibson.com:

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has confirmed he’s officially joined Red Hot Chili Peppers, MusicRadar.com reports. Klinghoffer, who has toured previously with the Peppers, replaces John Frusciante, who announced on December 16 that he was no longer a member of the band.

Klinghoffer had reportedly been jamming with the Peppers since Frusciante’s departure. The versatile musician, who also plays drums, toured with the band as second guitarist on their 2007 Stadium Arcadium tour. He’s also served as tour guitarist for Beck, PJ Harvey, and Gnarls Barkley, among others.

Curiously, Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are currently working on material for a new album, have yet to issue an official statement regarding either Frusciante or Klinghoffer. Klinghoffer will presumably take the stage with the band on January 29, when the group performs at the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year tribute to Neil Young.

I think it's a pity- he gave soo much to the Chilli Peppers sound, I hope this new album is going to be good. I saw them on the Stadium Arcadium tour, Im glad I got to see him play when I did.

I'm from Costa Rica sorry my english..John Frusciante has his unique sound, hardly the red hot would be the same without him, hi is an inspiration for me to start playing the guitar, he take his sound from his soul, thaks John for all you gave to the RHCP. Let's wait now to see how the RHCP will appear with Klinghoffer.

Frusciante won't have to worry about his next project(s) at all. Maybe he'll join forces with Chickenfoot. :?:

I think Josh will have big shoes to fill. Especially after, Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium- which is a double album and is mostly Frusciante over Flea. I wouldnt mind betting that this new album will be the last chillis album.

Also throw in Mother's Milk and Bloodsugarsexmagik. All of these were big successes. They were all unique and different. Someone that creative and flexible you cannot replace easily.. and you cannot top a double album and expect a replacement to fill the shoes.

Frusciante was part of the chilli peppers brotherhood and family, and this new guy is only a back-up. The sound is going to be merely based around Flea unless the new guy has something to offer.

John and Flea used to fight over guitar and bass parts, and I am fairly sure this is why he left. This has been since By the Way. I reckon this new album will have a lot of funk popping & slap bass guitar in it- which is what flea wanted for a long time and good in a way- you need to have a guitar that can mold around it.
The last time it happened, Dave Navaro took the role, and popped out One Hot Minute. It was a different, but it was a brilliant album. He knew he was filling in, he hated funk and felt dumb playing it. But he did it for his friends, and got on with it.

Though I am not a huge fan, I am a fan of the talent of the players,, which works well wit one of the most tone Deaf vocalist I ever heard in a band of this magnitude.lol Now in some crazy way I could never see anyone else fronting this band and it works which is an unexplained mystery.

Flea is a beast on the Bass and Frusciante by far is the best guitarist for that band and also a huge insperation for a ton of younger players. I really dont think that many people realize how many guys picked up a guitar because of him.I dont think many know that the guy is a schooled player as he holds back on his lead playing in that band. I hope he has not fallen off the wagon and I know he has about 10 solo albums but without him the band is not the same .imho

I love the chilis, but:

JF >>> RHCP

He's just such a creative fiend on his own. Music that you want to listen to. Not the mainstream hype like the latest chilis. I think Jf is pretty tight with the new guitarist, and I actually think the replacement will be pretty good. The album will be a success, the music will be mainstream radio friendly pop rock $@!&. Maybe flea will influence the band back into that original funk sound.

But as a guitar player, JF is on a different planet than the rest of band. Good for him. Listening to his strat makes my ears bleed tone.

Some people just never realize where their bread is buttered. He'll be back when he runs out of money again.

Maybe Flea is being a little childish when it comes to him wanting more bass lines shining through. Which is all good. Is that mainstream music? or is that what the fans want? he is talented, he just needs a creative funk rock based guitarist by his side. I havent heard anything about Josh, and I would be surprised if he can stand up to JF's plate and be a that kind of player.

I would be interested if the producer of the last few albums would agree/disagree on Fleas stance. They are the experts, he should listen to them instead of wanting to be a show pony playing funky bass lines.

Was it really worth JF's departure?

rhcp is a marriage between snazzy bass lines with pops and snaps and stratty funk guitar fills, hooks, and leads.
with some really cool solos , im reminded of david gilmour in the sense that john's solos have feeling and has great phrasing. its not all over the place.
dont get me wrong i love crazy solos but also love really nice slow solos.
but yeah, imo flea is as important as john and everyone else in the band.

I have read that one strat (the main sunburst one) was the guitar of hilal the guitarist at the start who they loved dearly who sadly died young, john took this guitar as a present from the others.
