Last night on AR-a 1954 Strat, serial number #47, with the pickup covers and the knobs replaced-------$50,000 to $70,000 !!!

The guy who owned it paid $3000, but I don't remember when he said he bought it.

Does that $50 to $70 thousand dollar price tag seem a bit silly? Would someone axcually pay that for the guitar?

Actually, yes. Me, I'm a player, not a collector. But there are collectors out there and they will pay that and more.

$50,000 is the going price for an early low serial no. 54 Strat.I would pick one up at that price in a heartbeat if I had the financial means. The 54 Strat is such a seminal piece of guitar history that it justifies such a price.I've always wanted a 54 Strat because it's such an iconic treasure and because it's the year of my birth.A 59 Les Paul witha figured top in near mint condition can fetch as much as$300,000 so a 54 Strat is a virtual bargain. As an avid collector and amateur historian I can certainly appreciate the prices of these rare musical artifacts.I am disgusted however when non playing collectors hoard them in silence in vaults doing nothing but growing value.Old instruments should be loved and played by people who love and feel music.

I'm not sure about the exchange rate between the $ and £, this 62 Strat is going for £30,000.00. I wasn't allowed to take it out of the display case instore, just wait until I win that lottery.

Guitar Center paid $959,500 for Blackie, a partsocaster for petes sake! $50,000 for an all original '54 seems like a bargin.

Remember that $959,500 went to the Crossroads foundation.

The channel that AR is on broadcasts PAWN Stars immediately after it.

Last week they had a guy who thought he had a 60's LP in to pawn and after examining, it was found to be a later 70's model.

Both shows have some good and not so good segments.

I have seen them do Fenders on AR and I have seen them pull necks. They knew about nail holes and spray shadows and all of the other little clues. The people I saw were knowledgeable.

Look, I'm all for vintage equipment and so on but paying that kind of money for what is, at the end of the day after all, a guitar is crazy, IMO. It's the same thing with vintage cars...they only go into the hands of collectors that let them sit and do nothing rather than using them. Little people like me will never get to even see some stuff because these "timeless" pieces are sitting in some person's collection doing nothing. I know for a fact, if I had a $50K guitar, I wouldn't even look at it in the fear that I may look too hard and destroy it. If you can afford, great....enjoy yourself but I personally wouldn't even want a guitar like that, even if I could afford it, because I don't buy museum pieces, I buy guitars that I'm going to play.

What does an original '54 Strat have that today's Strats don't, other than age and "history?" I think newer MIA guitars are probably better built, and especially when the reissues come out, sound the same!

Nah, the electronics and pups will go eventually then what do you have? A couple pieces of wood. The Antiques Roadshow is kind of a joke with musical instruments anyway. It looks like they just look at it and do a little research on Google, I don't think they pull the neck or check the pot codes or check the pups.

I saw them pull the neck off a Strat on this show. May have been the same episode, I don't know, I just happened upon it while changing channels. It seemed as though the appraiser was pretty thorough from what I observed.

It would be the only guitar I'd play for that kind of money, not hangin' in a vault. guitars are ment to play, not display. Would be nice to have that kind of money to think about it though.
