Hi all.

My new CP 50's Strat arrived today and it's a beaut! Needs a few tweaks in the setup, but one thing bothers me and that is the pickguard. It's too flexible, and there are 2-3mm gaps in places where it flexes. This moves the pickups around too of course.

Are they all like that on these models?
What is a good suitable alternative (preferably available in UK) and will any alternative be better (ie more rigid) than the one that comes as standard?

Thanks!

Ant

I went with a 50s style 3-ply pickguard. It was much more rigid and looked nice in black.

There are also 8 hole configurations that are 4-ply available in tortoise, black pearl and white pearl according to Fender's site.

I got mine from Musiciansfriend.com

A thin bendy scratchplate is vintage correct. They were like that then, its why fender introduced the 3ply guard in the 60's.

Personaly I just put some double sided stickytape on the underside of the guard. Works a treat and I still have a vintage correct guitar. Its also a lot cheaper than buying a new pickguard. You wont hurt the urethane finish on the Classic player 50's with it either.

Hmm. Thanks for both your replies. I like the idea of keeping the standard one and just tacking it down. Seems more 'authentic' that way, but if I could find a nice pale parchment slightly aged looking one I might go for that. Love the black look on Kong's too but personally I prefer the contrast of a paler colour against sunburst.

Thanks again!

I think I know this one! :D

you need to remove the strings and pickguard screws, then lift the pickguard. The pickups are attached to the pickguard by screws. By removing these you free up the springs that hold them in poition and also hold the pickup covers in place. They can simply be taken off then and replaced. There are very useful guides on youtube for removing the pickguard etc and it's really just a matter of taking time and being careful to note the positions of everything you remove and reassembling carefully.
