In my opinion, Fender does not make great hard rock/metal amps. They have tried, but their thing is very clean and loud amps, like the Twin Reverb, Deluxe Reverb ect. or something that gets a bit of breakup at highers levels for blues music imho.

If you want a good hard rock amp, look at Marshall, Mesa Boogie, or one of their several clones.

Peavey and crate makes some decent amps for hard rock on a budget

My amps are all modified or custom in some fashion....but there are good ones out there, I just don't think Fender is the best place to look for a good hard rock sound.

If you can, find something with a Celestion speaker in it, I, as well as many top musicians, prefer the way they break up under distortion

That is my $.02

That is the right price for a Blues Deville thats kind of beat up. Look around you can find them in good condition for $150 more!!!!

Good for you, phillywilly. A bit of advice from an (almost) old fart...

Listen to (and solicit) advice from other players, but don't be afraid to go and try a new instrument on your own. If you try an instrument from a Craigslist seller or a pawn shop or a guitar shop, you are under no obligation to buy it...or even like it!

One other thing, while advice for getting a particular tone is helpful, you have to put together your own rig--not based on what some else uses, but based on what sounds come out of the device(s) when you hit the strings.

My rig works great for me, but it might not be so great for another guy trying to play a similar style as me (Blues+Rock+Outlaw Country=Texas Roadhouse). Likewise, you could pick up your greatest hero's exact rig and not be satisfied with the tone.

Trust your ears, keep searching and stay hungry...
