Luke,

There is no quick or easy remedy here.

All the affected parts would have to first be removed from their respective assemblies. This is NOT a task left to the average player. Rather, this is something best left to a qualified guitar tech; and in terms of cost from start to finish, it would be very expensive as there is a lot of detail work to be done where a lot of time is involved.

Keep in mind that even after all the affected pieces have been thoroughly cleaned, I see that oxidization on many of these parts has eaten away at them. Many a pitted and blistered area would remain and consequently, these are the most vulnerable areas where oxidization will in fact, quickly return, even with the best of care. Further, with many parts of the bridge, the black plating would also dissolve, showing the base metal's natural color.

Unfortunately, this condition was allowed to continue way to long with this guitar.

I was just cleaning my 84 strat, and I was just about to ask the same thing. Mine has the vintage style 6 screw tremolo though. I used some mineral spirits on it already. I don't know if I should soak it in it or what. I've heard steel wool, but preferably I would want something that can remove it chemically, not physically, as it's near impossible to get anything in the backwards C part near the screw, which is where it seems to be the worst.

Mineral spirits are useless as they are merely a preservative coating for certain wood applications.

I use acetone, then steel wool as and if necessary/appropriate. However, consider my response to the OP.
