I recently aqquired a fender strat from my sister and it is in pristine condition but i don't think it is the 'guitar for me'

Not being funny mate but you've not given us a lot of info, though you've obviously tried. That guitar could be anything. Ok its a american 97/8, is it a artist series, deluxe, standard or california? Have any mods been done to it? Whats the condition of the guitar?
I'm fully aware that you may not know the answer to these questions so, can we see a picture?

Not really unless it begins with a D or AM. That tells whether its a deluxe or California series. It still doesnt give much indication as to the condition of the guitar and whether its had parts swapped out.
