I said the american special came with texas specials not the highway1. The Highway1 comes with AlNiCo3' pickups not tex-mex's.

Perhaps it still will. A roadworn 70's strat seems like the natural conclusion to that line.

I'm going to base my opinion on only 1 Highway One I tested. It sucked. The frets were not laid in right, they cut my fingers. Tex-Mex pickups (Not Texas Specials someone mentioned in the forums) were terrible and the 70's headstock looks like a clown designed it. I played the Fender Deluxe Players Strat (MIM) and it was so much better. I thought I made a mistake when I bought my MIM Lonestar Deluxe with the price being more then the Highway One. But after testing the MIA strat, I'm glad I didn't buy one. Its poorly slapped together and has the same quality as a Squire. You're paying for a "Made In the USA" and nothing more. I'd rather buy a Deluxe MIM then a Highway 1.

Fair enough - but I do disagree with your comparison of the H1 to a Squier. I owned a Squier '51 a few years back, and it was the worst guitar I've ever owned, bar none.

I preferred the H1 to the American Standards I played, and to the MIM ones I tried out. I really didn't buy it for a sticker that said "Made In (wherever)". I just wanted a guitar that suited me, and the H1 was it.

Your disliking a guitar it is not the same as it being inferior to other guitars. You didn't like it? That's fair enough - they're not for everybody.

It's certainly inaccurate, though, to say that any MIA guitar is the same quality as a Squier - that's an exaggeration, to say the least. The Squiers being produced now are of a higher standard than they were even just a few years back - but they're still way, way behind anything being produced by Fender USA, in terms of the type and quality of woods being used, and the standards of quality control being employed.

I can't help it i got to say sorry but it's just a compulsion ..

It looks like it is the end of the road for the HWY 1....Would that be a dead end or a cul de sac ?

DetroitBlues -- Yeah, the Hwy1 does not come with Tex Mex pups. Tex Mex pups are actually some pretty cool pups IMO.

Same quality as squier? Cmon!
I have played a few junk MIA fenders. They just sounded dead. I agree that the Highway Ones are lower grade US models but 9 times out of 10, they are still amazing guitars for the small pricetag.

detroit blues,
i have a hwy1, its perfect. frets neck pus all cool.
however i see where you are coming from. ive tested other hwy 1s,
all good, nut this one that is still hanging on the wall at GC. quality seems dead there. even at the pricetag of 499.00 has not sold.

it will be interesting to see the american special when it comes out.

considering i want to get a set of texas specials myself.

Notice how fender refered to the special as a cousin to the Highway1. Considering the Highways good sales figures and the cousin statement, I dont think its going anywhere for a while. Even though I dont personaly like big headstocks, theres a gaping big hole in fenders catalogue where they should be. Fender are just catering to a demand, nothing for Highway fans to worry about. I think they'll be around for a good while.

I'd still like to see a roadworn 70's in vitage white. Even I'd be tempted to have a big head then.

I have an '05 Hwy 1 that I like a lot. I didn't like that large style headstock on the upgraded ones. I had those in the 70s & 80s.

I swapped out the middle pup for a GFS 5.35k alnico r/w/-r/p and wired it for the 7 sounds with push/pull pots.

I use it as a hard tail and the maple neck has medium jumbo frets and feels real good (almost as great as an AM STD, but not quite).
It's one of those translucent honey blonde finishes that looks great with the maple neck.

So, Miami Mike, you don't think that the pre-upgraded Hwy One's have the same exact neck as the Am. Standard from that era? I thought they might, I just didn't know. Curious to hear someone else's opinion that has a pre-upgraded Hwy One.

If I recall correctly, the American series had hand rolled fingerboard edges; highly detailed fret and nut treatment; Bi-Flex truss rod; "DeltaTone" system; Micro-Tilt neck adjustment; straplock buttons.

The American Series seemed to be a notch or two above the pre-upgraded Hwy 1s.
