I also own a 62 am vintage ri, and have a VOX AC30CC, I am not a huge fan of the Vox AC30 anymore, too jangly of a sound when clean, and sounds like a wanna be Marshall when cranked. Never could dial in the sound I was looking for. but that is just MO on the Vox, others LOVE EM and swear by them.

I actually have mine for sale, and recently purchased a 65 Deluxe Reverb RI. Been trying the Deluxe Reverb out at GC for a few weeks, and have asked for some opinions here in the Lounge. If you want a glassy clean sounding amp, and breaks up nicely when cranked can't go wrong with the 65DRRI

Hey chris, watch Rory on video and you'll see he's always monkeying with the tone knobs with his pinkie. That's why he could make a Strat through an AC-30 sound like a Les Paul. Here's an interview you might dig...

Best advice is to try a bunch and see what you like.

Save yourself some time and money buying amps and get a '59BMRI LTD. Go try one out and become a believer.

I absolutely love my Epiphone Valve Junior with my Strat.

It's tube, it's inexpensive, and it sounds magnificent. It may not be what you want, depending on what you play, but for me it's absolutely perfect.

You can get the head and use your own cab, or there's the half-stack with a matching cab.

5W of tube power delivers well. I play 600-person auditoriums and rarely have to turn it past 9:00... anything higher than 11:00 will overdrive, which also sounds great.

(There are no markings on the volume knob)

It's also great to modify... there are entire websites devoted to mods.

What era Rory? Early on he used fender amps later (late 70's and 80's) he used Marshalls and Ampegs. Check it out on You Tube...

I recently test drove a Super-Sonic and loved it.

I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer to this question. As one can see by the many posts......it's more of a personal thing, as far as the sound a person wants. I think the best thing for a person to do is go to a music store where they have a large variety of amps, and give them a try. When you find one in your price range and sound that you like, go for it.

I wanted an amp that had a warm sound, and that was meant for blues and rock. I decided to go for a tube amp that didn't have a lot of built in effects (I could always buy pedals for that). I ended up buying a Fender Hotrod Deluxe and I've been very happy with it. Not too big in size, to make it easy to transport, yet big enough to jam with people, and carry over the drums. I've been very happy with it.

If you want a totally bitchin' rock crunch sound check out the Oranges. The Tiny Terror is 15 w tube Head that has killer tone and balls as big a Montana. For under $500.

The very best amp I have ever heard was made by Mesa Boogie. Mark Knopfler used Boogie amps for years.

I was ignoring that ignorant statement - and before I get flamed for use of the word ignorant, look it up. It means not knowing or unknowledgeable. But if we are here to help one another learn perhaps I shouldn't have. Anyway now the correction's been made.

As for Marshall's MG solid state series, well I wouldn't spend the money.

The original post says nothing about price.
Marshall tube combo's cost as much as a Fender Deville or a real
Vox AC30.
