Hi again Xhefri: thanks so much for posting those pictures of your workshop. I have had loads of fun studying them closely and spotting all kinds of interesting things.

One geeky question. In several photos there is a red and white box on the floor under the bench. It looks like a spray gun, but if so not a model I know. What one is it, please?

Or if it's not a spray gun - then what?

BTW: there's few things nicer in life than a double-bound body Tele, dontchathink? Tasty!

Thanks - C

Hey Mr. Ceri,

You have a keen eye and must be a lot like me! I always look at the "behind the scene" things in pictures, like on eBay and here as well.

Ok that weird spray gun is a texture gun for shooting texture on a wall before you paint it. It has the big hopper on the top to hold the "batter." Guess a guy could paint guitars with it and then do them in Camo....

When I bring guitarist into that room they always comment on the smell. It is like a combination of solder rosin, old electrical parts, and Nag Champa incense. Most people like the smell, except my wife.

Ok Ceri, you going to get the body finished soon???? I want to see what your going to do next.

I have taken the neck off my Ultra, as I had questions about the serial starting with E9..... thinking it was an early '90.

This is interesting. Being a late '90, I am puzzled as to why they used an E9 serial vs. a N0. I would understand if it was an early '90 but ....
What are your thoughts? perhaps they had too many serial#'s left over...

For a split second, I thought the body was an early one.. in NZ we go by date format dd/mm/yyyy where in the USA I understand you go by mm/dd/yyyy

Hey Mr. Blertles,

I have come to the conclusion that Fender serial number are just suggestions, especially during certain time frames. 1990 is one of those time frames.

The Ultra was introduced in 1990. This was a really confusing year for Fender serial numbers as E9, N9, N0 were all used. The serial number can say one thing and you take the neck off and it can say something else. The numbers and decals were produced far in advance, and some N9 decals (denoting 1999), were inadvertently affixed to some instruments in 1990. Consequently, some 1990 guitars bear 1999 "N9" serial numbers.

A similar thing happened with E9 (which should be 1989). Like was posted, the body and the neck are not usually more than 1 to 2 months apart. But considering the Ultra was just coming out, things lie this can happen. Oddly, most dates stamped in a neck socket are usually the small rubber stamp types as seen in the black numbers in your neck socket. I have been told Fender placed a bunch of serial numbers on necks and then had to use them up. Others have suggested that the serial numbers were placed on neck and then the neck was graded and then sat for awhile before going to its final destination, in this case a higher end Ultra Strat.

It is hard to know what all went on in the new Fender plant back in 1990!

Your observations are likely part of the issue which was raised regarding the neck serial numbers, neck and body dates of the early Clapton Stratocasters. This out of a posting on eBay for a guitar with questionable credentials regarding numbers. Even ME's information left us with doubts.

Even when we looked at serial number ordering for the Gilmour Project, because the first 500 were to have the books signed by Phil Taylor, we came to understand that the numbers were in random order with respect to build dates. In general, information available with respect to Fender's management of their numbering system reveals a hodgepodge practice. Most unfortunate considering the current interest and price points for vintage instruments and the many issues with respect to false representation we are seeing these days.

Well said zzdoc, Then add to this mix the fact that there are some people who pretend to "know it all" and speak with authority about the age and make of a guitar, trying t pawn it off as something "special". So I agree. After the Fender buyout from CBS and the moving process, I think there was a lot of odd things that could have happened at the Plant. Some out of necessity and others out of circumstance and lack of organization. Seems like in the last 10 years they have gotten beter, but then I do not own very many Z Fenders (Z=2000+)

Seems a no-brainer to have started the new millenium with a 2K0 series and then just proceed 2K1, 2K2. They could have gone 100 years with that one. But no....we get "Z". Apparently the legend of Zorro still holds sway in Southern California. :P

Off topic, but I meant to ask before - is that Tintin I see on your wall by the window, Xhefri?

Image

I don't think I've ever met an American who knew who Tintin is. I was under the impression he'd never crossed the Atlantic. Do I have that wrong, or is there some reason you are into Belgian strip cartoons...?

:D - C

PS Can you see what the picture is on the teacup in the first photo on my Burnt Strat thread...?

Hey Ceri, This is a postcard from Belgium.... a guy sent it to me that I bought a Tele from (he lived in the US). I have seen Tintin before, but I have spent quite a bit of time in Europe over the years.

Image

Your picts of the pair of knockers...ummm, I stood outside a church in Germany that I swear looked just like that! Sounds like you had a good time over the holidays. Nice.

Here is a card right next Tintin. A Christmas card from Don & Jeff Lace. Their father invented the.......Lace Sensor pickups..... :)

Hey Jeff, good to see your fine work here on the forum. I was driven back here in response to a project I did and I was geeked to see your work posted here. Of course I've seen your work for quite a while now and as always, quality stuff and great looking gear.

We worked together on a 60 Reissue Custom Shop that I customized a bit ago. You handled the H/S/H chrome domes set up that was just crazy. That guitar had more tone options than anything I've seen. I have a 96 Anniversary MIJ Tele that I may need that Burton setup for soon.

Hope to talk to you soon.
Dave

Xhefri I must of been in a fog as when I talked to you on ebay a few months ago you wrote and said you were going to come by the forum and now I see you have 80 post I did not even know you came by.lol

I am still trying to take in everything you just put up as it is just mind boggling. I love the 62 reissue candy Apple red tele. That was my main ax for over a decade that I dropped DiMarzio Fast Track pups in and is a classic rock machine. Is yours also a MIJ as they made some great axes in the 80s.

Doc I am still laughing about the cadaver joke. Wow we have Martian, Xhefri, Ceri, Niki, Doc and a lot more. Do I see a new company on the horizon.lol

Xhefri someone just posted the other day about looking for another Strat in Blue Burst as he had a Plus in one I have an Ultra in one and told him I was not sure if any other Strats outside of the Plus Ultra series were made in Blue Burst just like qblues Ultra in Firestorm were some of these colors just limited to this series.

Great thread and looking forward to many more

Another great looking Strat Xhefri
noticed in all mod/build threads most of the work carried out on bodys not a great deal on necks, possibly something you wouldn't like to alter to much, just wondered what it would look like with inlays matching scratchplate, maybe someone on the forum could generate an image with different types of inlay, just a thought, anyway congrats on another sweet looking build

Howdy! Do not have much time this morning but wanted to post the two sistas' here. I built the maple neck Custom Plus some months ago, and now here is the one built on this thread—together for a comparison! WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE THE MOST?

Image Image

There are some subtle differences such as: bridges, mini-switch instead of a push/pull pot for the neck, chrome pop-in trem bar instead of black tipped screw in type, etc...

I like the new one. I prefer rosewood necks, and not a big fan of the floyd rose bridge.

I'd take either one though. ;)

The new one, but swap out the modern 'C' for either a solid maple Clapton or '57HR neck profile for me. Those two suit me the best of all Fender necks.

Nice work......as usual. 8)

Those guitars are really beautiful. The chrome pickups against the pear pick guards against the black finish look amazing. Great thread, very enjoyable read and awesome pics.

LOL! The Cadaver joke took me back....I am a visual person and have a number of close friends in the medical profession.....so, I could see the body on the bench.....and now when I work on taking a guitar apart i will think AUTOPSY...

Regarding the Blue Pearl Dust finishes. Man I do not recall seeing that on any other Fender guitar other then a Plus. There was a transparent Blue Pearl Dust on some Deluxes using Ash caps and then the Ultra using Maple caps. The Plus I am using as a player guitar right now is transparent Blue Pearl Dust with the Ultra wiring using Green/Green and Purple Dually Laces.

I have a dead mint stick Blue Pearl Dust Plus tucked away. have thought about either selling or customizing, but have not brought myself to either.
