I have been a member of the Forum since 2007 but have not really started posting until recently. I had several kind emails coming to me asking me to get involved with the Fender Forum since my website was often discussed on here. I have enjoyed the good spirit (most of the time!) and camaraderie of those on the Forum.

Hey Xhef- First of all, I am sorry to hear about your Dad. must have been hard for you bringing it up.

that is an awesome Plus! I am a big fan of pluses and believe it or not, I am one of probably hundreds that you helped out, determing an authenticity of my Plus.

Nice to see you here. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to help out a lot with your knowledge.

God Bless!

Yep. I think it looks beautiful. I want me some of those chrome Sensors immediately! :D

BTW Xhefri: you can come and do my electronics anytime. I really like the neatness of your work. Respect.

And another thing. Are the shelves beneath your workbench carpeted as well as the top? That's a cool touch - I bet that has saved some bumps and scrapes over time.

If you plan on doing more of these threads I think 2010 is shaping up to be a good year on the Forum!

Cheers man - C

The guitar looks pretty sweet. Now you'll have to let us hear how it sounds with that pickup and wiring config.

I always wanted a black strat plus, but never wanted to spend the money on one because black is so basic lol. But I always watch them when one is up on Ebay. I saw a black ultra just sold for $699, didn't see that on in time.

Wow JasonSD, an Ultra for $699? that is a steal if the guitar was anywhere near decent.

Well Ceri, you need to finish up that body you were working on. We are all holding our breath! Regarding my work bench, ummm, you see, years ago I was doing this in my bedroom. Well, there was another person in the room with me sometimes, we often called that person: DE WIFE. When she saw soldering iron burns in the carpet, well, she was not too happy. Then bending over to work on guitars was a pain too.

So when I built my new shop, I built a building inside the building that is a guitar workshop/music room. I have "dirty" work bench out in the shop and in the guitar room a totally carpeted guitar work bench—custom built to my own height. Wow, what a difference that made!

Here is a picture of my bench in 2005. Nice and clean!

Image

By 2008 I started accumulating more and more parts. This is what it was like 1.5 years ago!

Image Image

I have really been sold on tube amps so I use an assortment of those. This is the guitar room and bench as of tonight!

Image Image

Have some more cool guitars coming soon. Next project will be a Crimson Burst with a custom Ultra setup.

Yeah the guy had it posted in the guitar pedals section on ebay, that might of had something to do with it going so cheap, but still looked like over 300 people viewed the ad.

It had a chip on one of the sides, but couldn't see it while playing. And it said the frets would need a mill in the not too distant future. I still would of bought it for that price.

Here's a link to the completed auction, but I think you need to be logged into ebay to see it.

But hold on just one minute. What happened to that nasty UPS ding?

......and for those who have never seen a swimming pool routing....there she is. Helluva loss of good tone wood, and the reason I couldn't rout my '97 American Standard for a battery pocket in the trem cavity

LOL!!! Hey sometimes our big, furry Maine Koon (man, this Forum does not let you use some common words to be politically correct!) cat does come out there and use those poles!!!!

Have to admit, I always dreamed of having a place to ding around with guitars. This bench was built from 2 x 4s and then I cut up some cheap carpet and used a air staple gun to attach it to every exposed area.... Great idea for some of you guys to do in the basement or a spare room.

An "MC"....the royal feline! There's a companion I've always wanted to share space with. Famiy allergies prevented that. Five years after the last cat died we've hooked up with a Yorkie. If you're out in the Seattle area wouldn't mind meeting you both next time I find myself in that territory. Meanwhile, you do have others from that part of the world you can hook up with.

Hi Xhefri,

I have taken the neck off my Ultra, as I had questions about the serial starting with E9..... thinking it was an early '90. As promised a while ago, I took pics and here we go:

here is my ultra:

the headstock- note the serial# :

This is interesting. Being a late '90, I am puzzled as to why they used an E9 serial vs. a N0. I would understand if it was an early '90 but ....
What are your thoughts? perhaps they had too many serial#'s left over...

For a split second, I thought the body was an early one.. in NZ we go by date format dd/mm/yyyy where in the USA I understand you go by mm/dd/yyyy

Hi again Xhefri: thanks so much for posting those pictures of your workshop. I have had loads of fun studying them closely and spotting all kinds of interesting things.

One geeky question. In several photos there is a red and white box on the floor under the bench. It looks like a spray gun, but if so not a model I know. What one is it, please?

Or if it's not a spray gun - then what?

BTW: there's few things nicer in life than a double-bound body Tele, dontchathink? Tasty!

Thanks - C

In a lengthy thread on dates and numbers, Mike Eldred commented that the neck and body dates are rarely far apart. There was some contention about this however, In your case, this appears to be true. Both are 1990 and separated by approximately 30 days.

Hey Mr. Blertles,

I have come to the conclusion that Fender serial number are just suggestions, especially during certain time frames. 1990 is one of those time frames.

The Ultra was introduced in 1990. This was a really confusing year for Fender serial numbers as E9, N9, N0 were all used. The serial number can say one thing and you take the neck off and it can say something else. The numbers and decals were produced far in advance, and some N9 decals (denoting 1999), were inadvertently affixed to some instruments in 1990. Consequently, some 1990 guitars bear 1999 "N9" serial numbers.

A similar thing happened with E9 (which should be 1989). Like was posted, the body and the neck are not usually more than 1 to 2 months apart. But considering the Ultra was just coming out, things lie this can happen. Oddly, most dates stamped in a neck socket are usually the small rubber stamp types as seen in the black numbers in your neck socket. I have been told Fender placed a bunch of serial numbers on necks and then had to use them up. Others have suggested that the serial numbers were placed on neck and then the neck was graded and then sat for awhile before going to its final destination, in this case a higher end Ultra Strat.

It is hard to know what all went on in the new Fender plant back in 1990!
