Unless you like Ebay as a hobby, I'd stay away. I've bought hundreds of guitars and parts on Ebay. But, if I get screwed, I can get most of my money back by reselling on Ebay. Funny, if I'm honest about a defect, I can get most, if not all of my money back! But, I like the hobby. You can find guitar oddities there. If I want to buy a guitar, for my instrument, I have to touch it. For some reason, I can just tell if its the guitar for me. Do the Guitarcenter thing. Usually, the staff doesn't know much, but they have the best selection. Try everything you can get your hands on.

I make sure I know what I am getting into when buying on eBay. You need to go to the store to find out if you like a U or C or V profile and to try the different pickups etc. Basically, you have to be an informed buyer. Once you know everything though, I find that most of the time, you can bring it in to your local luthier for a setup, and if it is a good guitar, it will sound and play good! If someone is misrepresenting on eBay, there is solutions for that too. Don't buy from someone with negative or low feedback. Ask lots of questions and document everything. There are some great deals to be had.

I've bought and sold many guitars on Ebay and never had a problem. Well, execept for that crazy women who clicked "Buy It Now" and then refused to pay saying I was lying and she never bought it. She tried to say I faked it. Still don't know how that's even possible.

Have you looked into "Craigslist" in your area?

A buddy of mine picked up a super sweet American Deluxe for 700.00 cash with the case. It's a 50th Anniversary 2004 in Tobacco burst with a maple neck. He talked to the guy via email, then went to his house, played it and fell in love.

The price was a steal!!! The guy who owned it, played it twice... Put it in the closet and forgot about it. He had other things on his mind at the time I suppose. Found it one day and listed it as "Used Strat" on Craigslist...

Check it out in your area.
