Hey
I am looking to get an entry level strat. I play acoustic and Acoustic/ electric. Music runs from classic rock to contemporary gospel/rock I would like to get my feet wet but have little funding. ( facing two kids going to college! ugg!!) Wondering what the difference is between the Standard Strat ( Mexican made ) and the J. Vaughn Tex-Mex strat that I see out there.

Side question:
Is going out to ebay a dangerous place to go for an instrument ??? Is the risk of a screwed up neck or electrical components too great. I am not sure the savings on a lower end guitar is worth the risk. ! ??

Thanks for the feed back.
Dwight

dont buy a guitar on ebay! buying an instrument without playing it is mad! buying it from someone in bumfuc/<, arkansas somewheresss without playing it is even madder!

go to guitar center and play some standard strats. all guitars are different. if you find a good one it will last a really long time.

if you want to get a used one, check craigslist.com and you can search in your area. people are always selling standard strats. then you can drive to go get it and check it out before you hand over your hard earned money.

you reinforced what my gut was telling me about that. I have been to Guitar center around the corner and played a bunch of them. Unforunately most of the guys in the store really just want to get you out the door with a sale and kind of tell you what they think you want to hear.
Purchased a bass there, looked at a whole bunch. Was pretty much set and then on the way out the door saw another they didn't show me. Played it, liked it, bought it.. Was less the everything else I was showed !!!

There is a list of authorized Fender Dealers at the top of this page. Find one in your area and go play a few.

I agree that it's risky buying a guitar without playing it first.

Were I you, I'd try to find a '87-'99 American Standard in the secondhand market.

Unless you're buying from a reputable dealer (i.e. Wildwood, The Music Zoo, etc) on Ebay, then you'd do better to buy from Guitar Center if that's your best option locally.

If you can afford it go for the J.Vaughan Tex-Mex Stratocaster.
Or the Classic series Stratocaster, also Mex made.
You can change to U.S. made parts if you want to in the future.
They're better build then the Standard Mex guitars (imo).

I own a 70's Series Strat. It's made in Mexico, but it's AWESOME!

I picked it up at my local Guitar Center for 475.00 out the door. The only other guitar I was looking at was a "Highway One" Strat (American Made) very affordable (under 600.00 out the door). They didn't have the Jimmy Vaughn @ the Guitar Center I went to, I had played one a couple years back and loved it, went in looking for it, or a Deluxe, which they also did not have.

I had a Standard Strat for a couple years... Was never happy, the nut moved, the tuners were cheap and the neck sucked. But this 70's Strat, it's a whole different ball-game, clean and a dream all the way.

B.T.W I hear the "Highway Ones" are on clearance @ G.C. for under 400.00 right now! That's an American Made Strat, for the price of a Mex...

As long as you know what you want, there is no reason to avoid the internet. If you find that you want a JV, then you can get a good deal on eBay.

I got a good deal on a MIM a while back.

I recommend not bothering with a Tex-Mex or standard strat and just getting a Highway 1.

Normally I would not buy a guitar on ebay - I agree that you need to play a bunch to see what fits you best. When I decided that I definately wanted a Fender Strat, and a 70's reissue, I started hitting the local stores to check em out. They had none in stock. So I had resigned myself to just saving up for a while until I had the cash and then just start shopping. Well I see t he exact guitar I wanted on ebay, and with one day left the bid was at $375. I decided to watch it just for kicks, figuring there's no way this $700 guitar would go for that cheap. Talked it over with the wife and we thought, just for fun I'd throw a $420 bid in at the last minute, figuring the bids would jump in the last minute of the auction. She refreshed the screen on her PC and I waited on my PC, mouse poised to click on the "submit" button. With 8 seconds left I hit submit and when the smoke had cleared, I had a new strat for $416!! As it turned out there was an email problem with the seller (he was emailing me but my spam filter must have been blocking them) and he felt bad that he shipped the guitar a few days later than he originally planned. So he sent a hardshell SKB freedom case along with the guitar for free!
The strat was a 2002 model he had bought and never used- it still had the plastic on the pickguard and backplate, and it was immaculate. So this ebay tale has a very happy ending. :D

Good one ScanMan... I think if you go into it with your eyes open, most eBay purchases turn out okay.

out of the 2 i suggest the standard... you can swap out the pickups, the tuners and it'll still be pretty cheap... but if you want something fantastic, get the highway 1... by far best value for it's price... but that's just my opinion

Ebay is a 4 letter word stay away :!: Go to a small guitar store instead of Guitar Center. If money is a issue but you still have to have a strat get a standard strat made in Mexico. Play it first, every guitar sounds different even if they are the same model. I'm sure you already know that.
