Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums. I'm currently working on a Strat project and I had a question about it. I'm using a Robert Cray Strat body, American Strat picksups and electronics, and a MIM Strat neck. I'm personally not a fan of the vintage-style string tree, and was thinking about replacing it with one from an American Strat. However, after comparing it to my American Strat, I noticed the Mexican Strat string tree is located slightly closer to the end of the headstock than the American one is. The Mexican string tree also sits lower than the American, which is probably why the locations are different.

Anyway, my question is, can I use an American string tree on a Mexican neck in the Mexican location? Or will the string angle not be enough? What effect does the string angle have anyway? Thanks for the help.

It doesn't really matter where you put it, the string angle is no big deal and it's not gonna hurt anything. If you'll notice different strat models, the string tree placement isn't really in the same exact spot anyway. I guess the only thing you need to worry about is which one you want.

I have used an American string tree on a Mexican neck and it worked fine. I did turn it upside down however to position it closer to where the original tree was positioned. I dont really think it makes that much difference where it is positioned, as long as the tree is pulling the string closer to the headstock.

New guy on the forums here. :D
I was just wondering if we really need string trees. I have an Am Deluxe V-neck. As an experiment, I lifted the strings out of the tree and went crazy with the trem bar. The strings didn't even hint at popping out of the nut grooves and the locking tuner holds nicely. What am I missing?

ttt.

Hi all new to Fender strat player here. I am wondering this myself. I just purchased the American style string tree for my MIM strat. As i am not liking how the B & e strings get out of tune.

The only thing i noticed is it has a small stub coming out of it. I wonder if i just scree it in it will make the small hole itself or do i have to drill a small hole for the stub. any tips from those who have done this change to their MIM strats?

I installed two american trees on my MIM the way the older americans are. One for the B&E strings and one for the D&G strings. I drilled a small hole for the "stub" on the american tree. Maple is pretty hard wood and you may bend or break the cast tree if you try to just run it in.

Hey thanks for your reply. Did this help the strings stay better in tune?

I had no tuning issues to begin with. I installed it to help with string break angle over the nut. I had a weird note ghosting on the G string and the extra tree eliminated it.

Oh...Im having some tuning issues. Did you do anything else to your MIM Strat?

Im a lil skeptical about drilling a hole on my new baby. Maybe ill get some of the graphite trees.

I swapped p/u's, decked the trem, shielded the cavity and p/g, added a push/pull volume pot as a "bridge on" switch.
