ok,,,ill give yall some of my history! (guitar that is)....

ive been playing acoustic guitar for about a year now...played a lot of simple chord songs including the avett brothers, grateful dead, radiohead, sublime...blah blah blah

But now i asked my parents for a new electric guitar...and i got it friday

I got a fender highway one electric (sunburst)
and a fender frontman 65R

so its completely different from acoustic...what should i learn now?

i know my pentatonic scale for basic soloing...I know my caged theory....What something Useful to learn on Electric??

BTW...im interested in learning more on how to improvise!
( specially grateful dead tunes )

Thanks a Ton

Are you shooting for a distorted sound?

Dead? Try "Casey Jones," it's a fun one.

Learn to do some bent double stops. That is, play two notes using two fingers, and bend and release the lower string.

It really depends on what you like right? What are some other "electric" groups/artists of interest to you?

- Expand the basic chords and work on 7th, inversions, (different voicings)etc.

- Work on pick attack and dynamics. Crank the gain up and try to play your scale of the day pattern and phrase clean/overdriven/metal(rip those strings) without changing the amp settings.

The following techniques are used almost entirely by electric guitar players. Yes, I know that every once in a while somebody might try some of this on an acoustic guitar, but not often:

Pre-Bend and Release
Pinch
Tone Roll Off
Two String Bend to Unison
Bend Behind the Nut
Harmonics (two hand)
Tapping
Vibrato with tailpiece
Scratching
Grinding
Feedback

As an acoustic guitar player you probably know the following:

Slides (up and down)
Hammer On
Pull Off
Bend
Palm Mute
Finger Picking
Harmonics (open)
Vibrato on Neck
Volume

Add your own and have fun.

Are you from NC...? Just curious. I saw the Avett's several years ago in a local restaurant. We (wife, kids and I) were having dinner and these three cats come walking in with about three pcs (best I remember); one of which was a stand up bass. It took them maybe 20 minutes to set up... then they did a little sound check... which was kinda funny, it was mostly unplugged. But OH MAN! they sounded incredible, so much so, i applauded the sound check, and then introduced my self and bought there CD. Real down to earth guys, all of them! And good music.

Peace,
