Hey I was just wondering if John Mayer's Monterey Pop Strat is a real one or not. I mean I know he's John Mayer but is it a real one or not.

Yeah it's one of Pamelina H.'s 210 originals. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he has a couple of them. That stupid backstage pass thing isn't painted on the body if that's what making you doubt it. It's just a sticker. John just had enough sense to take that unsightly thing off.

Don't you love how just when you've spent your last valuable nickel on acquiring a duplicate of everything you thought one of these artists plays, they go and shift gears into something else. Meanwhile, the bank is repossessing your car and your house. :?

interestingly enough, it has been rumored that one of John's 3 Monterey Pops is one of Ed Roman's Fabulous Fakes, as seen in this text from their page regarding John's new Crashocaster design:

"John is Known For Playing Fabulous Fakes
He Played A Monterey Hendrix & A Crash Clapton

This appears to be his own new signature graphic that he will be seen with soon.
I am told it is also a Crash Model
The Prices On These On a John Mayer Strat Will Be Approximately 3200.00
Call Ed Roman For Info"

so it is more than a rumor I guess...

He may have a fake, but he definately has and plays the originals. You can see the Pamelina H. signature in Where the Light Is and I saw it up close in Brooklyn at his Myspace Secret Show. Unless Roman is faking where Pamelina signed her name. That'd be a little much though.

I'm beginning to wonder why it all matters, and why he needs defense counsel in all of this:?: Seems like every time one turns around he's aping something one of his influences has done. :?

No, I know that 2 of his 3 are real, I was just addressing that question. I also have seen both of his main montys up close.

another interesting quirk on John's (and other montys in the run of 210) is that not many of them have the "V' on the front like some do. for example, here is a headstock photo from Monty #2, which was owned by a guy i know (who now is selling it):

see the V? it is inconsistent with the entire run. I've been meaning to ask Mike about that...

Well now he is playing a white Beck strat and he left the Dumble home. But this cover of Crossroads is pretty lame and he sounds like he is using fuzz on the solo. Awful tone for a guy who I admit usually has a great tone.

I watched the VH! Classic concert last night, the one in which he closed with Buddy Guy. Sorry, dudes, I just don't see the guy. He sings like he has a mouth full of marshmallow whip, and I can't figure where that's coming from. I've said before that there are such overtones of Dave Matthews in his entire style, and that SRV guitar clone. I keep trying to find something 'original' but unfortunately I can't. I won't deny his musical apptitudes but, as a contemporary, Bonamassa is way out in front IMHO. I'll be collecting his work for sure.

+1 He's just another clone. I've heard more original stuff at open mic nights.
This should be a "Not another John Mayer" thread.

Bonamassa's great and not a bunch of personal drama going on. That's how you can play when you keep you head out of the pipe if you get my drift.

It's unfortunate, what with all that's driving Mayer's career. I trust that Chanman will have much to say in rebuttal, but that's what makes a horse race, isn't it.

I'm not gonna waste my time with it. everyone's got an opinion. I'd personally slit my throat before going to a Bonnamasa concert or listen to one of his CDs. It's funny cause they both use Two-Rocks and are pretty good friends with each other, yet their fans constantly argue over which of them is superior. I'm tired of it.

Chanman you shock me. Why would you slit your wrist before seeing Bonamassa. I know without a doubt you would love the guy as he is a beast on the fretboard. That would be like me saying I like Clapton so I dont want to hear Hendrix.

Hey for all the controversy Mayer can stir up he has young guys like you into the blues and that is great. I just wish he would stay true to one style for more than two albums as he is kind of going all over the place. There is no doubting the guy has a lot of talent but I would really like to see more intensity than sensitivity when he plays,

By the way Chan your axes are looking more impressive by the day.lol Interested to see if something is added after the holidays.

thanks man! I just got surprised (we open our gifts on Xmas eve so its easier on my mom to cook the next day) with the '04 LP Standard Premium Plus that I had in layaway after selling my SG standard, as my big gift for xmas. it isn't a fender, but nobody is perfect. besides, i think the last purchase from fender for a while is going to be TBO... just too much time and money...

I just think he's too shedy for my tastes. I saw this vid of him on youtube playing blues, then throwing tapping and other stuff like that in, and I almost gagged. I mean he seems like a nice fella, and John thinks highly of him, I just am not all into him. don't really know why.
