That is the question.

I've pretty much given up on the idea of keeping the hotrod pristine. It seems like its getting marks on it from just looking at it.
Given our current freezing weather, should I take it outside and let the temperature change check the finish?

I may try it out with a mexican urethane finished guitar first.

You are a man of science!

Try the experiment!

But if the body gets ruined, will you be sending it to Ceri?

Well I was going to push the envelope of a blackie relic job on him. Just because I know he's never done a relic before. Its this guitar thats getting it. That old 95 squire series neck thats wearing out. Its on a new powerhouse body that just doesnt match. A bit of crazing may help that.

Nik,

The weather will change, just not as quickly as you may want. You could experiment, but I would wait until warmer weather myself, but I live in a warmer climate than you.

It is completely up to you. I think you want to start on it sooner rather than later. Science experiement time.

Or use the heater and caned air method and see if it works.

Canned air doesnt work. The mexican strat body is out on the snow cooling now. The missus is warming the hairdryer. If that doesnt work its a night on the snow and infront of the gas fire in the morning. I'm not touching the hotrod, it will be relic'd this time next year at its current rate anyway.

I'm taking full advantage of our current cold snap mate. Its a mexican urethane covered strat body I'm doing so it should be tough as old boots.

Here's the reason why.
That guitar is suffering with a lot of paint sink into the body joins. Also the finish is misting up on the forearm contour. Making it a prime candidate for a bit of relicing, You can just see it on this picture, just up from the reflection of the flash.

Here it is on the snow cooling down.

If you want to do a quick decent checking, just put it in the freezer for an hour then take it out for an hour or place it in the sun. Repeat as many times as you want. Usually gives it that pretty horizontal checking. The canned air almost always gives it that horrible spider webbing checking that looks terrible and fake. The other way looks somewhat decent. And poly doesn't check very well, almost never does. If you want checking on a poly you will pretty much have to take a razor blade and cut it yourself.

I always wondered about the caned air air stuff and if it would do it but I guess it would be to small of an area. Maybe heat one up the set it on a block of dry ice

Ah I had a bit of a go earlier mate. Well the truth is checking urethane is a hard process. I did get somewhere but it appears to target weak spots first. A hour outside on the snow and then a couple of minutes like this.

Ceri's gonna go mad when he see's that.

Ditto!! I have a personal interest in that guitar....like I feel as though I made the introductions. I recall well the hissy fit you had at the thought of my refinishing my '89 Clapton in grigio silverstone paint.

Or are you just getting another ready for Ceri's genius. :?:

Ok I got a few cracks using the grill on the cooker. Nothing special so I thought I'd try something else. Can you guess what I'm doing here.

nikininja,

I can't guess what the process will be but all I see on your counter is acids of varying ph's and a tin of biscuits? I'm intrigued my friend.
