I have always been more of a les paul guy myself, but recently I picked up an eric johnson strat used and love it. Is there a way to tell what year it is from the serial no.? any help would be appreciated.

Yes. If you can post the Serial numbr from the guitar, someone hear should be able to get you close. Or you could email Fender Customer Support and they should be able to tell you a lot about that particular guitar.

I believe all this to be accurate regarding EJ Strats.

So you don't have to remove the strings, loosen the strings til they're flopping, pull the slack towards the bridge then capo the strings at the middle of the fretboard. Unscrew the neck, lift it out of the pocket and check the dates. Put the neck back in the pocket and screw it back down. Retune.

I think this is the easiest way to adjust the truss rod as well.
