Is this typical?
I don't have much experience with a Strat before this one and figured this was normal, but wanted to verify.
If so, do other just cut your volume in 1 3 and 5 to compensate?

I'm kind of thinking about trying a wacky wiring scheme with a 5-way superswitch to compensate for this.

Yes this is normal. In the in-between position the pickups are wired
paralel and reducing the output. There are wiring schematics to put
them in series and double the output to create a ''humbucking'' sound.
Originaly the Strat came with a 3 position switch, bridge, middle and neck.
In the '70s they changed to a 5 position switch.

Then again, wiring the pups in series will get rid of that wonderful ringing, chimey sound you get in positions 2 and 4. I couldn't live without that. It wouldn't be a strat anymore.

Yes,i like the original wiring on a Strat also.
For humbucking sounds i'll use a Gibbo.
