I had to have the top one refinished, so I chose white.

I prefer maple fretboard. Glossy finish on maple neck looks very good :)

Maple or Rosewood makes no difference to me. I like the old days when the good folks at Fender made the decision for us!

Interesting discussion of esthetics. Prior threads dealt with tone. In that regard, I urge interested parties to Search the Forum rather than attempt the resurrection of a dead issue.

Doc to make matters worse here's undeniable proof that the differences in boards is so small its not worth noticing.

The only perceivable difference between these 2 guitars is the volume increase. Both guitars have exactly the same spec's, the deluxe has slightly higher set pickups though. The amp is as basic as can be and its recrded in realtime.

I don't know nikininja. Not trying to start another debate....buuuutttt

I actually hear the difference and its exactly as expected. The maple has a tiny bit more snap and twang to me. A little glassier too. Maple seems to reflect sounds a bit more, really noticable in higher frequencies

The rosewood sounds a bit more subdued and warm as usual.

This has always been my perception when playing rosewood and maple FB's, and that goes way back to trying out many guitars since the mid 1980's.

I do hear the volume difference, which may be all in the pickups and could also have more effect that the RW board. But again, I hear the same distinct yet subtle differences I have always noticed

I admit this is to my ears, which I think can pick nuances as well as any after as long as I have been playing with amps and guitars. Man, I have even done some tube rolling in my preamps to get the best combintations (I really like these old Telefunken's in position 1). I also admit the difference is so subtle, that I think most would not notice. Not to mention the feel differences which make guitars stand out to the player as much as the actual sound.

Additionally, these are still both maple necks, which also adds simularities to the tone

Keep in mind that maple has been used for decades to brighten a instruments tone. The Les Pauls used maple tops to get some high end back, think how dark a LP would sound with no maple top. More like a SG for playing dark chords of doom. But even with a maple top a les paul is no match for a fender in the bell like chime department. Might be in the bodies, might be in the necks, might be in the single coils All the above???

This is the great thing about electric guitars, we can debate all day, because of the shear number of factors that come into play...we all know a guitar is the sum of its parts coming together, it's tone is not dependent on any one single factor. This is why you can use all top quality parts and still get a dog or use average parts and get a good sound, the parts have to work right together....it's a cool science

Not a problem. Welcome. New members are certainly not aware of some of the lengthy threads we've entertained on many subjects. This issue of tonewoods has been one of them. We always recommend searching the Forum threads when this happens. It truly has been exhausted to the nines, and I am sure you will find some of the technical posts quite informative.

Wishing you a great holiday season.

Doc

A well constructed reprise, if I do say so myself. 8)
